The Speech Pathologist will screen and/or assess children with language, literacy, pragmatic, fluency and other communicative difficulties and provide assessment and assist the PSD coordinator to prepare applications for individual funding for the students.

The Speech Pathologist will provide intervention/therapy in line with the Response to Intervention (RTI) model of service delivery supported by Speech Pathology Australia for inclusive school services. This may include liaising with other Allied Health staff, teachers, supporting classroom learning via team teaching and/or providing intervention for students both individually and in groups.

The Speech Pathologist will work closely with the PSD Coordinator to provide information and session guidelines to support school staff and parents to support improved student learning, development, and wellbeing.

Must currently have Speech Pathology Australia membership and Working with Children Check.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment and prepare applications for individual funding for students.
  • Screen and/or assess students with language, literacy, pragmatic, fluency and other communicative difficulties.
  • Complete diagnostic and assessment result reports as per school requirements.
  • Liaising with other allied health and medical professionals as required.
  • Provide verbal feedback to parents, and verbal or written assessment feedback to school staff as appropriate.
  • Design and deliver inclusive Response to Intervention (RTI) speech therapy support and intervention in a school environment with implementation supported by teachers, ES staff, and relevant professionals. Understand its impact on whole school student learning.
  • Provide intervention/therapy to both individual students and groups as required.
  • Complete written progress notes in accordance with school requirements.
  • Provide frequent consultation with PSD co-ordinators, teachers, other professionals, staff, parents etc. about possible management strategies.
  • Provide informational guidelines and session exercises to school staff and parents as appropriate.
  • Liaise with teachers and provide advice on modifying classroom tasks in order to best meet student needs.
  • Facilitate and attend SSG (Student Support Group) meetings as required.
  • Participate in Speech Pathology Australia’s Self-Regulation Program
  • Update and extend knowledge and skills repertoire regularly.
  • Other duties as directed by the Principal.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated ability to consistently provide evidenced based best practice in a professional environment and service delivery that is consistent with Speech Pathology Australia’s Code of Ethics.
  • Comprehensive understanding of language and literacy difficulties in adolescence and its impact on academic success and social, emotional wellbeing.
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by constructive relationships with parents, staff and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver inclusive Response to Intervention (RTI) speech therapy support and intervention in a school environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver professional learning, for teachers and other relevant professionals, in the area of language and communication.
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications and experience in Speech Pathology and a commitment to update and extend knowledge and skills repertoire.
