Stars Foundation provides school-based engagement support for First Nations girls in 53 schools across Australia.

An exciting opportunity to lead the Stars program at Newton Moore Senior High School, in Bunbury, Western Australia has opened up.

Stars provides a holistic program that supports Indigenous girls and young women to attend and remain engaged at school, complete Year 12 and move into full-time work or further study. The Stars Room is available to all members and provides a culturally safe, warm environment – a place where the girls and young women in our program feel nurtured and inspired.

The full-time Program Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the program meets the agreed target objectives, working with the program mentors to provide a diverse range of activities to support the Stars Members to develop the self-esteem, confidence and life skills they need to successfully participate in school and transition into a positive and independent future. The role is both a functional and team leadership position, where you work within the established guidelines, policies and mission of the Stars Foundation to mentor students, whilst also being accountable and responsible for program outcomes and staff.

The Program Coordinator will:

  • Be full time - Monday to Friday – with some afterhours work (camps, sleepovers etc)
  • Work in a Stars team of three within the school, leading a team of two Stars mentors
  • Report to the Stars Regional Manager
  • Be located at Newton Moore Senior High School in Bunbury.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with a strong understanding of Aboriginal people and culture
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment
  • High level verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise and manage competing demands within limited timeframes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Sound computer skills
  • Demonstrated skills in implementing policies and procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety legislation
  • Able to embrace a culturally diverse workforce
  • Innovative and thinks adaptively about problem resolution
  • Valid Drivers Licence
  • Current Working With Children Check or the ability to obtain one prior to commencement

Desirable attributes

  • Experience with program coordination in an educational or community development context
  • Demonstrated skills in team leadership and staff supervision
  • Water based qualification, either Bronze Medallion or Community Surf Rescue Certificate
