Advocacy and Practice Workers - Geraldton

Streeties

About our organisation

Streeties is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation that has been supporting Aboriginal children, youth and families in Geraldton for over three decades. Our current programs focus on encouraging young people and families to recognise and build on their existing strengths and connections within the community.

About the role

Streeties is looking for people to fill several full-time roles working 38 hours per week in programs that support young people and families involved with child protection.

Although the details of each role are important, our priority is finding people who understand and are passionate about families experiencing Streeties’ values: love, dignity, autonomy and connectedness.

Our people also need to be able to recognise and push back against the ways that other people, organisations and systems deny families those experiences, and sometimes produce harmful, even abusive effects.

We expect our team to identify and critique practices and impacts of racism and colonisation, from individual behaviours to areas of system processes and policy.

Skills and Experience

  • Desirable: Degree in social work, counselling, social science or related field.
  • Desirable: Any training and/or experience relating to FDV, trauma, family therapy or applying an anti-oppressive lens to organisations and systems.
  • Keen interest in applying research dealing with impacts of colonisation, power imbalance, racism, family violence, and community development.
  • Humility and a desire to continually learn and grow.
  • Ability to reflect on how your background, identity and experiences impact your view of the community and how you interact with different people.
  • Interest in and understanding of the impacts of colonisation and racism on Aboriginal people and/or other historically oppressed groups.
  • Clear, concise note-taking and familiarity with Office365.

Benefits

  • Level 5 – 6 of the Social and Community Services (Western Australian) Interim Award
  • Work in a passionate, community-focussed team committed to upholding the rights of Aboriginal young people and families in Geraldton
  • Salary packaging benefits
  • Ongoing professional development opportunities
