By partnering with local organisations we strive to create sustainable, long-term improvements that enable people to lead healthier and more prosperous lives.

About the Role

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of SurfAid's leadership team, working closely with and reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This role is critical to achieving SurfAid's organisational goal of being a well-run and sustainable organisation.

The CFO is responsible for overseeing and managing SurfAid's financial functions, ensuring alignment with internal processes and policies while maintaining compliance with standards set by ACFID, DFAT, ACNC, ATO, and other regulatory bodies. In addition, the CFO plays a pivotal role in supporting SurfAid's development partners and facilitating the delivery of impactful projects

Responsibilities

Financial Framework 15%

  • Develop and maintain financial policies, processes, and systems.
  • Provide strategic financial guidance to the CEO and Boards.
  • Conduct financial reporting and analysis.

Financial Management and Compliance 50%

  • Prepare, monitor, and report on budgets.
  • Manage payroll and PBI salary packaging.
  • Deliver monthly management and board reporting.
  • Maintain and oversee procurement, accounts payable/receivable, bank reconciliations, and overseas funds transfers.
  • Maintain and oversee accounting systems (QuickBooks and Xero).

Risk Management and Compliance 15%

  • Ensure compliance with ATO obligations and statutory requirements (ACFID, CID NZ, ACNC, Charities Services NZ).
  • Manage external audits and address financial wrongdoing, fraud, and counter-terrorism financing (CTF).
  • Oversee reserves monitoring.

Program Finances 20%

  • Provide oversight of partner compliance and reporting.
  • Support partner capacity building.
  • Manage project budgeting, reporting, and donor reporting.

Selection Criteria: Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting and CPA or IPA.

Experience and skills

  • Demonstrated financial management experience, including the development of organisational financial policies, procedures, and reporting.
  • Significant accounting experience in the INGO sector.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Xero, and Google Suite.
  • Demonstrated payroll skills, including salary packaging.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.

Desirable

  • Experience working with DFAT-funded programs.
  • Knowledge of ACFID and CID standards.
  • Experience managing finances in multi-currency environments.

Job Type

The role is a permanent part-time position of a 0.8 loading.

Salary

$120,000 pro rata. PBI salary packaging available.

Location

The role is predominantly work from home with regular visits to SurfAid's Alexandria office.
