We have an exciting opportunity for a dedicated Team Leader to lead the Youth Justice team on a Full-time permanent basis.

SYC’s Youth Justice team has the privilege of providing individualised, holistic and therapeutic support to young people aged 10-25 who have intersects with the justice system. Using a throughcare model the Youth Justice team assists young people to reach their full potential by addressing underlying needs through relational, culturally safe, and trauma-informed approaches to help rebuild connections, foster resilience, and create pathways that divert young people away from custody and toward healing and stability.

As the Team Leader, you will play a crucial role in the day-to-day direction and supervision of our youth justice teams and other justice programs. Your leadership will be vital in fostering a supportive and empowering environment for both the team and clients.

Day-to-day activities will include:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the youth justice teams, ensuring that services are delivered effectively and efficiently.
  • Providing guidance and supervision to team members, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Coaching team members on achieving the outcomes specified in applicable service contracts or funding guidelines.
  • Working closely with the manager, report, resolve and/or escalate any incidents, feedback, and complaints
  • Provide professional, client-centred support to young people in the youth justice system.
  • Develop and conduct group programs and training with young people in custody and community.
  • Building positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance service delivery and support for clients.

About You

A compassionate and values-driven leader with a deep commitment to supporting young people through a therapeutic and trauma-informed lens. You will nurture and guide a dedicated team, fostering a culture of care, safety, and connection to create meaningful, lasting impact. With strong time management and organisational skills, you will effectively coordinate resources and support program delivery that is responsive to the unique needs of young people, ensuring outcomes are achieved with empathy, integrity, and purpose.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Experience in engaging and working alongside young people who have had contact with the justice system and who may be navigating the impacts of housing instability, trauma, grief, and disconnection from family, community, and culture. This includes supporting young people whose lives have been shaped by systemic inequality and who may not have had access to the supports and relationships needed during critical stages of development.
  • Experience in achieving outcomes with minimal supervision and direction.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to write timely and accurate case notes and reports.
  • Strong engagement skills and the ability to interact effectively and sensitively with young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiation skills along with the ability to identify innovative and lateral solutions.
  • Self-motivation and initiative in supporting clients and achieving outcomes.
  • Experience in youth justice community service order programs or lived experience with the justice system (highly regarded).

For this role, you will need to:

  • Be willing to complete a Working with Children Check and National Police Check
  • Have possession of a current valid Driver’s License, willingness to drive.
  • Hold and maintain an approved First Aid Certificate.
  • Be eligible to work in Australia.
