The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) is looking for a Senior Lawyer to join its Launceston team.

The focus of the role will be to lead the criminal law practice within the region, support the operation & management of the office, and provide culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to clients in a broad range of matters. The Senior Lawyer supports with providing community legal education and works closely with team members to ensure our clients receive culturally considered legal assistance.

TALS specialises in providing advice and support in the areas of criminal, civil, and family law to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Tasmania, and does so in a culturally appropriate, inclusive, and supportive way. We also influence policy and law reform.

What we are looking for

  • Significant experience in criminal practice and procedure, with substantial experience in appearance work in the Magistrates Court and experience in the Supreme Court.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring and supervising staff, including junior lawyers.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others and foster a positive team environment.
  • An understanding of the social issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Tasmania, and a deep appreciation and respect of their cultural needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to relate to a wide variety of people.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills, demonstrating a history of maintaining positive and effective partnerships.

Requirements

The successful candidate will need to undergo a National Police Check and apply for a Working with Vulnerable Persons registration.

Admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in Tasmania.

A current driver’s licence is required, as travel across Tasmania including regional areas is a necessary requirement of the role.
