The Queensland Charity and Welfare Association (TAQWA)

ABOUT TAQWA

The Queensland Charity and Welfare Association (TAQWA) is a community-driven organisation that represents and serves Australian Palestinian, Muslim, and Arab communities, with a specific focus on new arrivals to Queensland, from Gaza. Our leadership and core team are predominantly composed of Australian Palestinians, which allows us to advocate effectively for the unique needs and aspirations of Palestinians arriving from Gaza to Australia. We work closely with members of the Palestinian and wider community to address social, cultural, and educational needs, promoting social cohesion, resilience, and a strong sense of community identity. Through our initiatives, we strive to empower communities, fostering connections and a deeper understanding within the broader Australian society.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a unique opportunity to lead a vital, community-driven initiative supporting newly arrived Palestinian families from Gaza as they rebuild their lives in Queensland. As TAQWA’s Programme Coordinator, you’ll play a central role in delivering a holistic support program that strengthens social cohesion, fosters resilience, and builds community connection.

You’ll work closely with families, community leaders, and partner organisations to ensure families feel supported and empowered as they navigate their new environment. The role is both strategic and hands-on — you'll guide the overall delivery of the program, while also being deeply embedded in the day-to-day realities of the communities we serve.

Key priorities include building trust and engagement with families, coordinating culturally tailored activities (like youth wellbeing programs, parenting workshops and community gatherings), and ensuring support is trauma-informed and responsive. You'll be the key point of connection between community needs and the services, partnerships and resources designed to meet them.

The ideal candidate will be a natural relationship-builder, culturally attuned, emotionally intelligent, and able to work independently while holding a strong sense of purpose and accountability. Arabic fluency and lived experience working with (or within) Palestinian or Muslim communities will be highly regarded.

ABOUT YOU

You’re someone who thrives in community-led environments, where real impact happens through trust, empathy, and connection. Whether it’s coordinating a grassroots program, supporting a family through complex systems, or navigating cultural sensitivities with care — you bring heart, resilience, and purpose to everything you do.

You understand the unique challenges faced by newly arrived refugee communities and approach your work with cultural humility, trauma-informed awareness, and a deep respect for lived experience. You’re proactive and adaptable, able to balance the bigger picture with the practical day-to-day of making things happen.

Ideally, you’ll bring experience working in a refugee, settlement, or multicultural context — along with strong community engagement skills, sound judgement, and a track record of delivering inclusive, impactful initiatives. Event management skills and experience will be highly regarded. Fluency in Arabic and/or lived experience within Palestinian, Muslim or Arab communities will be highly valued.

Most of all, you care deeply about people, and you’re ready to step into a role where your work directly contributes to healing, belonging and hope.
