Aboriginal Project Officer

The Kids Research Institute Australia
  • Pursuant of Section 50(d) of the Equal Employment Opportunities Act 1984, the occupant of this position must be of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

The Opportunity

Here at Telethon Kids Institute, our vision is simple – happy healthy kids. Improving the health and well-being of Aboriginal children and families in particular is an overarching priority for every program and team here at the Institute.

We now have an opportunity available for an Aboriginal Project Officer to join our Youth Mental Health team and support the co-design, development, and implementation of a culturally safe and responsive, trauma-informed parenting program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families who have experienced trauma. The program will have social and emotional benefits for families by strengthening a sense of connectedness with family, kin, country and culture, and Indigenous identity thereby promoting healing in a culturally safe and responsive way.

You will play an integral role within our Aboriginal and non-Indigenous research team and will contribute to a variety of activities to help facilitate this project. One of your key focuses will be to facilitate yarning circles, which may be gender specific, and so in this role we are specifically recruiting one male Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person to ensure cultural protocols are followed.

With an experienced project team around you, you will also have an opportunity to contribute to the following activities:

  • Assist with obtaining ethics approval to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Provide cultural leadership and cultural advice to the project team to assist in relationship building with community members and organisations.
  • Assist with the planning and management of data collection and entry.
  • Visit community groups to promote our project and share our findings.

Conveniently located in our modern office in Nedlands, this position will be offered on a part-time basis (3 days per week), however increased hours can be negotiated with the successful candidate. The contract will be offered for 3 years in the first instance.

About You

If you are passionate about working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families and have an interest in improving mental health outcomes, then we want to hear from you!

The key to your success will be your demonstrated experience in the following:

  • Demonstrated experience in providing health information to or working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, families, and individuals in a culturally appropriate way.
  • Highly developed interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in building relationships and working collaboratively with key stakeholders at various levels.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work with and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally diverse and gender diverse people.
  • Research experience will be favourable but not essential.

This position is advertised in accordance with section 27 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984. It is a genuine occupational qualification to be male as the successful candidate will be required to facilitate yarning circles comprised of only males.
