A Rare Leadership Opportunity in the Pacific

The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific, proudly supporting regional development since 1947. Governed by 27 member countries and territories, SPC is a treaty-based, intergovernmental organisation and a cornerstone of regional collaboration — with over 900 staff working across public health, ocean science, education, agriculture, geoscience, climate, and more.

SPC plays a central role in addressing the shared challenges of the Blue Pacific, acting as a convener, knowledge partner, and service provider to its members. Headquartered in Nouméa, with offices throughout the region, SPC is a vital institution supporting sustainability, resilience, and inclusive development. https://www.spc.int/.

About the Role

The Director-General is SPC’s chief executive officer and public representative, responsible for leading a complex, decentralised, and culturally rich organisation. This role requires exceptional leadership, diplomacy, and strategic capability.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Leading SPC’s strategy, operations, and long-term vision
  • Upholding scientific integrity and regional neutrality
  • Engaging with senior leaders, heads of government, and international partners
  • Championing regional priorities and collective interests in global forums
  • Navigating multi-stakeholder governance with transparency and trust

The Director-General is an international public servant, expected to represent all SPC members equally. As such, the role must remain apolitical and uphold the principles of neutrality and merit-based leadership.

Who Should Apply

We are seeking a unifying, credible, and values-driven leader with:

  • Proven senior leadership experience in government, multilateral, development, or scientific organisations
  • Diplomatic and political acumen, with experience navigating cross-cultural, multi-member environments
  • Track record of leading institutions through complexity, transition, and crisis (e.g. climate events, pandemics, political unrest)
  • Ability to inspire diverse teams and advocate for the region on the global stage
  • Ideally, proficiency in both English and French, or a demonstrated commitment to bilingual and bicultural leadership

We strongly encourage applications from Pacific Island nationals, women, and members of the Pacific diaspora with senior international experience.

Remuneration & Benefits:

  • Tax-free salary commensurate with the seniority of the position
  • Furnished residence with vehicle
  • Pension package
  • Relocation support
