About the Sax Institute

The Sax Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that improves health and wellbeing by driving better use of evidence in policies, programs and services.

The Sax Institute has an international reputation as an Evidence Specialist, and nearly 20 years’ experience in translating research findings into policy drawing on our own expertise as well as that of our more than 50 member organisations. We work with governments, health organisations, research organisations and a network of experts nationwide to analyse policy problems and find the best evidence-based solutions.

Our office is based in Glebe, however, we offer great flexible and remote working arrangements (we come to the office for a purpose – to connect and to collaborate – with flexibility to choose your location of work outside these times). Our staff employee engagement survey showed our staff are proud to work here at the Institute and would recommend it as a great place to work – so read on and see how you can join the team!

About the role

We are seeking an experienced and talented Communications Officer to lead the development of a range of the Institute’s communications strategies. Reporting to the Head, Business Transformation, this role ensures that all the work of the Institute is communicated in an impactful & consistent manner, with a focus on contributing to the strategic goals and objectives of our programs.

Through this role, you will craft engaging and accessible content, using your expertise to simplify complex topics while maintaining clarity and precision. Your ability to present information in an engaging, audience-appropriate way will be critical in driving our communications forward.

Although no two days will be the same, responsibilities will include:

  • Developing & coordinating external communication - writing and editing content for various channels, including the Institute website, e-newsletters and social media posts.
  • Leading e-newsletter development – managing the content creation and production of our e-newsletters, including Evidence Matters and to promote the PHRP Journal.
  • Media management - drafting media releases, liaising with media representatives and providing support to ensure effective reputational management.
  • Analysis and reporting - creating and and analysing communications campaigns through tools like Campaign Monitor and Google Analytics, optimising future communications strategies based on your findings.
  • Maintaining communications standards - ensuring all content adheres to our Style Guide and Brand Guidelines, and collaborating with external vendors (e.g., printers, photographers) to meet deliverable requirements.

About You

Our new Communications Officer will be able to show the following skills and experience:

  • 5-8 years’ experience in a marketing and communication related role in a medium-sized organisation
  • A tertiary qualification in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations or related area, or demonstrated commensurate experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to translate complex information into engaging and relevant content for a variety of professional, policy and public audiences.
  • High-level organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities to deliver excellent outcomes
  • Excellent initiative, motivation and time management skills with the ability to meet required deadlines and complete projects within minimal supervision
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills and a high level of initiative, with the ability to adapt plans promptly as required in response to unexpected events
  • High-level interpersonal skills and ability to develop productive working relationships and liaise with a broad range of stakeholders positively and diplomatically
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, PowerPoint and Excel, and the ability to design Word documents effectively and efficiently
  • Proficiency in relevant technology platforms and processes, including Campaign Monitor

Experience working in the health sector and social media experience will also be highly valued.
