The Sax Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with a mission to improve health and wellbeing by driving better use of evidence in policies, programs and services.

We have an international reputation as an Evidence Specialist, and nearly 20 years’ experience in translating research findings into policy drawing on our own expertise as well as that of our more than 80 member organisations. We work with governments, health organisations, research organisations and a network of experts internationally to analyse policy problems and find the best evidence-based solutions.

About the Program

Our Evaluation and Evidence Services Program aims to connect evidence with those who need it to address real-world health and social challenges. We do this by designing and conducting rigorous evaluations of polices and programs, conducting rapid evidence reviews to identify evidence gaps and to help answer important questions, facilitating bespoke training courses to build capability in evaluation and research, and facilitating collaborative workshops to mobilise evidence into actionable insights for real-world impact.

About the position

We are seeking a Senior Evaluation & Research Officer who is passionate about making a difference and improving real-world health and social challenges. You will have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, an ability to effectively communicate complex information to diverse stakeholder groups, an ability to collaborate effectively and to understand diverse perspectives, and an excellent understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods and analytical techniques.

Although no two days will be the same, responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the design of rigorous evaluations using experimental or quasi-experimental methods
  • Designing data collection tools (e.g. surveys) and conducting statistical analysis of quantitative data
  • Collecting and analysing qualitative data
  • Supporting the day-to-day project management of evaluation and/or other research projects
  • Supporting the communication and translation of evaluation and research findings to stakeholders
  • Supporting business development activities including grant applications and tender responses
  • Contributing to ethics applications and other tasks as necessary,

Selection Criteria

We are looking for a proactive and dedicated Senior Evaluation and Research Officer to fill this position who has the following experience and current skill set:

  • A post-graduate degree in public health the behavioural or social sciences or other relevant discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in designing and conducting evaluations using experimental and/or quasi experimental designs
  • Experience in preparing ethics applications, quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis
  • Experience in conducting literature reviews, including data extraction, synthesis and reporting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse range of people including senior researchers, clinicians and senior government officials
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget
  • Demonstrated ability to display initiative, lead and mentor team members, work independently, prioritise workload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment

Experience using and analysing big data for evaluations is highly desired.
