Tjarlirli Art Indigenous Corporation is seeking a dedicated and passionate Studio Coordinator to join our team.

About Us

We represent artists from Tjukurla in the Ngaanyatjarra lands of Western Australia and Kaltukatjara (Docker River) in the Pitjantjatjara Lands of the Northern Territory. Our art centre, established in 2006, has ties to the Papunya Tula movement and is recognized for its cultural significance and aesthetic creativity.

Our artists, both elders and young talents, are represented by leading galleries such as RAFT Artspace, Vivien Anderson Gallery, Aboriginal Contemporary, Outstation Gallery, and Short St Gallery. They regularly participate in art prizes, professional development workshops, and specific artistic and cultural projects.

The Role

The Studio Coordinator role is a dynamic and challenging one that requires a diverse skill set, including artistic knowledge, studio management skills, and the ability to work and live in remote areas. It offers the opportunity to work closely with artists, contribute to their development, and play a significant role in promoting and preserving the cultural significance of the artwork produced by the Tjarlirli Art Indigenous Corporation.

Working under the Arts Centre Manager, the Studio Coordinator’s primary goal will be to manage the studio space and support the artistic and professional development of artists and arts workers.

The Studio Coordinator will also be involved in assisting with exhibitions. This includes everything from the logistics of transporting artwork to setting up the exhibition space, to marketing the exhibition and liaising with gallery owners and potential buyers.

This role is based in the Kaltukatjara community, NT, but requires regular travel between Kaltukatjara and Tjukurla, WA, and nationally for exhibitions, markets, and additional events.

Selection Criteria

Essential

• Tertiary qualifications in visual arts or equivalent work experience in an arts or related industry with a strong understanding of different art forms, techniques, and materials. This knowledge should be broad enough to support artists working in a variety of mediums.
• Demonstrated experience in facilitating the creation of artworks with artists. This includes understanding their vision, providing guidance, and helping them overcome creative or technical challenges.
• Demonstrated understanding and respect for Indigenous cultural practices and traditions in artmaking
• Experience in managing a painting/artist studio
• Demonstrable understanding of the Australian and international art markets as they apply to the Aboriginal art industry
• Arts marketing skills; highly developed aesthetic sense and ability to critically assess art; experience in exhibition co-ordination
• Ability to work in a team and to perform in a high-pressure environment
• Proficient IT skills, and proven administrative, written and oral communication skills
• High quality written and oral communication skills
• Current manual driver’s license, and the ability to travel widely in support of Tjarlirli Art activities
• Capacity to live and work in a remote location
• Current police check/clearance or ability to obtain one

Highly Desirable

• Experience working with Aboriginal people and the ability to work in an inter-cultural setting
• Experience training and supervising staff within a dynamic work environment

Contract Details

This is a 12-month full-time contract position, however there is flexibility to be discussed at the interview.

Remuneration

The base salary is between $65,000 - $70,000 per annum, plus super and salary sacrifice benefits (pro-rata). In addition, other competitive allowances and entitlements such as onsite accommodation are also offered and will be discussed at the interview.

This immersive learning experience is designed to equip you with the skills and insights needed to excel in your role.

For your safety and to enhance your remote area travel skills, we also offer a 4WD training course.
