We are seeking a mid-level backend developer with a strong interest in DevOps practices to join our team of creative and innovative technologists.

We are Australia’s most awarded social impact agency.

We use design and technology to make change happen, at pace and at scale. In the last 12 months, we’ve designed and built Australia’s first online family violence intervention order, established a new approach to co-design for the Victorian mental health sector, built a peer-to-peer product that helps people learn Auslan, and launched a campaign to shift mainstream perceptions of climate change—plus many more.

Our practice is built on strong foundations of human-centred design and digital making. There are around 60 of us, based mostly in Naarm (Melbourne), working across strategy, research, design, content, delivery and a wonderful support team.

About the role

As a Mid-Level Backend Developer with a DevOps focus, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining core backend components of our application stacks, with a strong emphasis on automation, integration, and API development. You will work collaboratively with our multidisciplinary project teams to ensure high-quality, efficient, and scalable solutions.

Your days will be spent:

  • Developing and maintaining APIs, middleware, and integration solutions
  • Implementing DevOps practices and automation workflows
  • Working on CMS and CRM development projects
  • Collaborating with multi-functional project teams to plan and deliver work sprints
  • Contributing to the design and implementation of backend systems
  • Participating in our various craft initiatives through regular meets and working groups
  • Assisting in the continuous improvement of our development processes

About you

You are someone with:

  • Experience in backend development, with a focus on API and middleware development
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools
  • Experience with automation and CI/CD pipelines
  • Understanding of database design and management
  • Experience working with cloud platforms and services (especially AWS)
  • Practical cybersecurity fundamentals
  • Familiarity with CMS and CRM development
  • The ability to legally work in Australia.

You will also bring:

  • Strong communication skills - our developers work directly with other developers, designers, producers, and clients
  • An ability to thrive in a collaborative, creative team environment
  • A desire to learn and contribute to process improvements and innovation
  • An eye for detail and a passion for clean, efficient code

You may also have:

  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (Next, Vue)
  • Familiarity with Drupal, CraftCMS, or other CMS platforms
  • Knowledge of containerisation technologies (e.g., Docker)
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible)
  • Interest in data analytics and business intelligence.
