Transfolk WA is a not-for-profit organisation that supports trans and gender diverse people in Western Australia. We provide support services, community spaces, advocacy, education and training, and events. We are a dynamic organisation, at a key juncture in our growth, seeking to continue to expand our services and reach to best serve our community.
About the Role
Our diverse Board oversees the strategic direction and governance of our organisation. The Board provides direction and support to our recently appointed Chief Executive Officer and works to achieve the best outcomes in service delivery, advocacy, and support for the trans and gender diverse community in Western Australia.
As Transfolk WA continues to grow as an organisation we are looking for capable, skilled, and enthusiastic individuals to join the Board. We are particularly seeking to build the finance and legal capability of the Board. These skills will assist the Board to navigating relevant accounting, contractual, and compliance matters as we grow the organisation's operations.

Key Responsibilities
All Board members are expected to:
- Uphold Transfolk WA’s purpose and values; act in the best interest of the organisation; and avoid and actively manage any conflicts of interest
- Participate actively in Board meetings and subcommittees as required
- Contribute to the development and oversight of Transfolk WA’s strategic goals and initiatives, financial performance, and sustainability
- Provide insights and recommendations on key decisions to strengthen Transfolk WA’s programs and operations
- Provide expertise in your area of knowledge to support organisational objectives
- Act as an ambassador for Transfolk WA, promoting its vision and purpose to external stakeholders; and build connections with potential partners, sponsors, and stakeholders
- Contribute to the organisation's good governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance including the ACNC Governance Standards
Experience & Capabilities
Essential
- A demonstrated passion for Transfolk WA’s purpose to support the trans and gender diverse community of WA
- Financial or legal expertise with experience in a relevant setting
- Understanding of the not-for-profit sector and challenges that can arise from support, service delivery, and advocacy
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Commitment to governance best practices and willingness to comply with regulatory standards and relevant organisational policies
Desirable
- Lived experience as a member of the trans and gender diverse community
- Experience serving on a Board or in a leadership role
- Relevant qualification or professional certification in finance or law
- Completion of the AICD Company Directors Course or similar
Commitment
- Attend Board meetings, currently scheduled every two months
- Participate in additional meetings or events as required
- Prepare for and contribute to strategic discussions and decision-making on an annual basis
- Approximate total commitment is 6 hours per month
- Applicants seeking to serve for at least two years are preferred
