What are we looking for?

The Treaty Authority seeks a Senior Researcher to contribute to research supporting treaty negotiations while upholding Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Governance (IDS/IDG). This role will lead research grounded in First Peoples’ paradigms, aligned with the Treaty Authority’s research strategy. Additionally, the Senior Researcher will advise and collaborate across the organisation to implement the First Peoples Data Sovereignty Framework and policy, ensuring the Authority meets its obligations related to Indigenous Data Sovereignty.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in advancing Indigenous-led research and data governance within the Treaty process.

What you need to succeed

The Treaty Authority is seeking a Senior Researcher to support its research strategy and uphold Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Governance (IDS/IDG). Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research, producing outputs, and disseminating findings to diverse audiences.
  • Managing research briefs, policy, communications, and engagement materials.
  • Oversee research projects by external academics and ensure effective communication of findings.
  • Strengthening relationships with community members, partners, and knowledge holders to foster a collaborative research culture.
  • Contributing to developing and implementing the First Peoples Data Sovereignty and Data Governance Framework and Policy.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to uphold IDS/IDG principles and developing training materials.
  • Coordinating research and IDS/IDG-related projects, managing administrative tasks, and supporting internal decision-making processes.

This role offers an opportunity to lead impactful research while ensuring the integration of Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles.

About the Treaty Authority

The Treaty Authority is an independent entity with a mandate to facilitate the formation of treaties between the State of Victoria and First Peoples in Victoria.

The Treaty Authority’s work is grounded in Aboriginal culture, lore and law and led collectively by a panel of five Members committed to Aboriginal self-determination and empowerment. It engages with a broad cross-section of stakeholders including the State of Victoria, the First Peoples’ Assembly and Traditional Owners in Victoria.

The objects of the Treaty Authority’s work are to:

  • Facilitate the journey towards reconciliation, mutual respect and tolerance between First Peoples and other people of the State and to
  • Maintain, promote and advance the self-determination and empowerment, culture and human rights of First Peoples.

What you’ll bring

We are seeking a highly skilled individual with:

  • Lived experience or demonstrated ability to engage with Victorian First Peoples and/or other First Peoples across Australia.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with sensitive data and build relationships.
  • Proven research experience with a track record of producing outputs.
  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline (Higher Degree by Research preferred).
  • Knowledge of cultural safety and intercultural communication.
  • Experience in research within First Peoples’ paradigms and understanding of First Peoples-led research processes.
  • Passion for reform benefiting First Nations people in Victoria.
  • Strategic thinker with a keen interest in critical data practices.
  • Excellent project management and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, be proactive, and collaborate effectively in a dynamic environment with adaptability and resilience.
