PRAP, the Private Rental Assistance Program, is a preventative intervention that provides holistic support to households experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

PRAP is intended to prevent or end homelessness and housing crisis by:

  • Rapidly rehousing people capable of sustaining private rental after initial support.
  • Supporting at risk households to access and/or sustain affordable and appropriate housing in the private rental market.
  • Assisting people who currently live in crisis, transitional or social housing to become independent in the private rental market.

Why this role matters

The private rental worker function is focused on generating and maintaining private rental access opportunities for clients, rather than direct client support.

The PRAP Worker is part of a Private Rental team who work closely with Homelessness Entry Point IAP teams and other specialist homelessness services, programs and teams.

The position is expected to work collaboratively with other specialist homelessness services and agencies where people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness may be present, as well as with key stakeholder agencies. These may include the Department of Health & Human Services, Peak and sector bodies, area health services, family violence services, and other The Salvation Army TSA entities. Meetings with community members, real estate agents, private landlords and housing-related partnerships may be required offsite.

Attached to the position is providing access to PRAP brokerage. Management of the funds, including dispersal and acquittal, is a feature of the role. Funds management must be within PRAP brokerage Guidelines and according to TSA policy and documented processes.
This is a permanent full time position based at Geelong, though may provide services at other sites within the region from time to time (includes driving company fleet pool vehicles to offsite locations).

What we're looking for

  • Diploma or above tertiary qualification in a relevant social work or human services field
  • Understanding of and experience in a human services environment
  • A working knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 is essential to the role
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate service sectors and negotiate outcomes on behalf of others ​
  • A current VIC Drivers Licence
  • Valid VIC Employee Working with Children Check
  • Ability to provide proof of Eligibility to Work in Australia
