About the role

The Associate Director, Research Ethics is a new position created to lead and manage the animal ethics and human ethics functions within the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity (OREI) at The University of Melbourne. The position works closely with the Director, (OREI) and Associate Director, Research Quality and Governance (OREI), reporting to the Director.

This is a rare opportunity to oversee the development and continuous improvement of animal and human research ethics as a shared service. The aim of this service is to ensure the University’s commitment to the responsible conduct of research is effectively and professionally supported.  

The shared service represents a change in the delivery of ethics support, education and review. Key functions of the new service will include dedicated teams to support and deliver the various service offerings. In addition to providing outstanding leadership to the teams, you will proactively develop and implement innovative approaches to performance analysis, reporting and strategies to ensure a focus on service excellence and continuous improvement in service delivery.

Maintaining close working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders will be vital to your success in the role.  You will consult widely with the University of Melbourne research community to achieve high client satisfaction, work collaboratively with other support functions in the research portfolio, and effectively lead and manage staff resources. This is a fantastic opportunity to use your outstanding leadership and management skills to build and enhance the functions capacity to support educational programs and build capability in the ethics team and beyond.

About you

Overseeing a large team, your extensive leadership experience will enable you to build a strong and highly collaborative cohort and connect effectively with multiple external stakeholders. You will be a proactive change catalyst, confident in dealing with sensitive information and making high-stakes decisions.

  • Have a postgraduate qualification and extensive experience working within a large, complex organisation and change environment
  • Have very well-developed leadership skills and an ability to communicate with influence and effectively lead a team through change
  • Be highly skilled at developing actionable and pragmatic solutions for risk management, policy and process
  • Be proactive in building and managing relationships with a range of stakeholders as well as a creative problem-solver and independent thinker
  • Have strong demonstrable experience in exercising initiative and judgement
