About the Department of Rural Health

The Department of Rural Health is based in Shepparton, Ballarat, Bendigo and Wangaratta and has associations with more than 40 smaller rural towns in Victoria. The key purpose of the Department is to provide professional health education and research training in a rural context with an aim to increase the rural health workforce.

The Department works closely with the local community and healthcare partners to ensure that we remain relevant and connected. Our partnerships underpin our teaching and research.

About the Role

This role provides an opportunity for an early career researcher to undertake research and evaluation of programs and issues relating to nursing and allied health workforce. The research will be undertaken with and for health service partners to trial innovations in recruitment, retention and grow-your-own strategies.       

 In a typical week at work, you may:

  • Read existing literature on rural workforce issues and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with external and internal partners to undertake Rural Health workforce research and evaluation with the UDRH Director.
  • Undertake data collection and data analysis within the projects you are working on.
  • Design new projects that are needed in the local region.

About You

You will hold a PhD or be undertaking a PhD, have excellent research skills and be innovative and practical in your approach to addressing rural health workforce problems.  You will seek new opportunities, like to learn and innovate, enjoy living and working in a rural region, and engage well with external partners. 

Ideally, you will further have:

  • Knowledge of evidence and current research on rural workforce issues in Australia.
  • Experience of research related to rural nursing and/or allied health workforce.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies and the ability to learn advanced research skills as required.
  • The ability to undertake research in a multidisciplinary team with academic researchers, health professionals and health services.
