Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage Work Health and Safety (WHS) initiatives to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and best practices within the union movement in the Northern Territory.
  • Plan, coordinate, and deliver Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training across the Northern Territory to enhance workplace safety knowledge and compliance.
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate WHS campaigns and events that promote workplace safety and union engagement across various industries.
  • Provide expert advice and support on WHS matters to affiliated unions, workplace leaders, and activists to foster a culture of safety and compliance.
  • Represent Unions NT in WHS-related forums, negotiations, and stakeholder engagements as directed by the General Manager, Secretary or their nominated delegate.
  • Identify and develop workplace WHS leaders and activists to strengthen the union movement’s advocacy for safe and fair workplaces.
  • Assist affiliated unions in mobilising workers into action on WHS issues, ensuring collective strength in workplace safety campaigns.
  • Utilise organising frameworks, tools, and strategies to engage workers in WHS activities, ensuring their active participation in union-led safety initiatives.
  • Support the General Manager, Secretary and other senior leadership in the development and implementation of WHS policies, procedures, and strategic plans.
  • Report to the General Manager and provide regular updates regarding WHS performance, trends, and required interventions.
  • Prepare and present monthly reports on WHS activities, key performance indicators (KPIs), and compliance status to the General Manager, Secretary, and/or President.

Selection Criteria:

Essential:

  • Strong leadership and organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple WHS initiatives effectively.
  • Current Cert IV training and assessment
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in WHS laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • High-level written communication skills, including preparing reports, policies, and complex correspondence with confidence and clarity.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills to engage, advise, and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders on WHS matters.
  • Proven ability to facilitate training and education programs to improve WHS awareness and compliance
  • Demonstrated commitment to unionism and the broader labour movement, with experience in the Northern Territory context and/or other Australian jurisdictions.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • High-level personal performance standards, with the ability to manage competing priorities, remain positive under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • Punctual and reliable with a strong work ethic.
  • Current Northern Territory Driver’s License (mandatory).
  • Access to a motor vehicle (to obtain a motor vehicle allowance as part of the salary package).
  • No relevant criminal history.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working for a trade union or WHS advocacy within the union movement.
  • Tertiary qualification in Law, Work Health and Safety, Industrial Relations, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of workplace safety trends and emerging risks in the Northern Territory workforce.
  • Experience in policy development and implementation of WHS frameworks within unionised environments.
