The Community Development Coordinator is responsible for implementing a Stakeholder and Community Engagement Plan to increase awareness of the headspace Early Psychosis (hEP) service, reduce stigma associated with mental illness and increase the health literacy of the ACT community.  

The role will be responsible for working in partnership with the headspace Canberra and hEP teams to deliver a range of engagement activities to community members including young people, families and carers, health professionals such as General Practitioners, Canberra Health Service, School Counsellors.

headspace Early Psychosis service is funded by the Australian Government. It was first established in 2014 and works to make a difference to the lives of young Australians who either have a first episode of psychosis or who are at ultra-high risk of developing psychosis.  The model of care is based on the Orygen Youth Health psychosis model of care, backed up by training and fidelity inspections by Orgyen, in support of the national program.

As the Community Development Coordinator, your role specifically will:

  • Actively promote headspace Canberra and hEP services within the community to improve awareness of mental illness, services available and how to access services.
  • Coordinate and/or participate in community events including interagency, consortium, consumer representative groups and partner meetings.
  • Facilitate information sessions with external services such as General Practitioners (GP’s), Canberra Health Service, Schools and other social and health service providers.  
  • Support the development of promotional/educational resources, activities and events to engage young people and their families.

Essential Criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications relevant to the field of work, such as health promotion, social work, psychology, or community development/engagement
  • Current Australian Driver’s Licence.
  • Three (3) or more years experience within the field.
  • Experience in facilitating Community Development initiatives and projects.
  • Ability to develop, document, monitor and report on community awareness strategies and plans within established guidelines and frameworks.
  • Willingness to oversee or support volunteers or students undertaking certificate level. studies.
  • Sound knowledge of mental health promotion and messaging.
  • Demonstrated ability to consult with a wide range of stakeholders to develop local referral networks and implement community awareness and education campaigns within established guidelines or procedures.
