The University of Sydney
  • This is an exciting opportunity to join a world-leading research institute, committed to tackling the significant environmental challenges we face
  • Part time (0.8 FTE), fixed term contract until December 2024
  • Full time base salary $117,116 - $132,079 + 17% superannuation (pro-rata to 0.8 FTE)

About the opportunity

The Sydney Environment Institute (SEI) is commencing a new program of work to accelerate multidisciplinary research in the biodiversity space. Alongside climate change, biodiversity loss is recognised as the gravest environmental challenge we currently face.

In recognition of the biodiversity crisis, there is increasing momentum and interest in biodiversity, notably from government and industry. This includes the Nature Repair Act and Nature Positive Plan, reforms to the EPBC Act and likely new nature disclosure requirements.

As the Biodiversity Hub Manager, you will be responsible for managing the implementation of a suite of initiatives with researchers across the University and beyond, and building further opportunities for the University of Sydney’s engagement in biodiversity research.

Reporting to the General Manager, Sydney Environment Institute, and collaborating with other members of the SEI team, your key responsibilities will be to:

  • build on existing foundations to accelerate a suite of multidisciplinary biodiversity research projects, including in urban biodiversity and the intersection of the climate and biodiversity crises
  • build new research collaborations between USYD academic staff from different faculties, schools and disciplines, and with external partners
  • coordinate and advise on submissions to inquiries and prepare policy briefs for government on research findings
  • support the identification, development and submission of funding applications for research projects
  • oversee project financials, monitor budget expenditures and coordinate external funding opportunities
  • cultivate new relationships with industry, government and community partners.

This position offers flexibility for either a full-time role or a preferred 0.8 FTE part-time.

About you

Are you ready to support the establishment and implementation of the Biodiversity Hub at the Sydney Environment Institute? This role offers a unique opportunity to manage project processes, resources, and stakeholders while fostering effective collaboration across the University in pursuit of impact.

We are seeking candidates with:

  • strong project management skills, including experience managing large and complex projects with multiple work streams and diverse stakeholders
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex concepts and processes clearly, and adjust communication styles for different stakeholders
  • excellent organisation skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and balance competing priorities to deliver outcomes within tight timeframes
  • an understanding of the biodiversity crisis and how industry and government are addressing it
  • relationships with relevant stakeholders, ideally in government and/or industry
  • working knowledge and experience within research, ideally in higher education settings would also be advantageous.
