About the opportunity

The Project Manager, Cultural Collections (Identified) will lead a dedicated project to enhance access to the records of First Nations peoples held in the University of Sydney Archives. The Project Manager will, through extensive consultation with First Nations communities, develop frameworks and protocols to enable culturally safe descriptive pathways, index points, and access frameworks to the archival records.

The Project Manager will also review the records’ physical management, including storage arrangements and culturally safe access processes for First Nations peoples and communities. The Project Manager sits within the University Archives and works closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Strategy and Services portfolio, Chau Chak Wing Museum, the University Library, and external stakeholders.

The role will provide overall project management for the initiative to enhance archival access for First Nations communities, including building and implementing overall project plans and providing effective management of activities and deliverables to ensure milestones and deliverables are realised.

This is a challenging and culturally significant role and an opportunity to make a long-term contribution to the University and First Nations history and culture.

About you

  • demonstrated understanding of the role of a major specialist collection in meeting the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and researchers. This includes the capacity to learn about Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights, Indigenous cultural protocols and related cultural safety issues
  • experience project managing multiple work streams, or leading large complex projects and ability to work according to strict deadlines and manage various demands.
  • effective ability to manage a diverse group of key stakeholders on large or complex projects and the ability to develop/cultivate productive relationships with local First Nations communities and key users
  • experience with working in the Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums sector or in working with heritage materials is advantageous.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
