This position is a Targeted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Position. Preference will be given to applicants of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. This Exemption is claimed under Section 21 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

The Poche Centre for Indigenous Health is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander -led, multi-disciplinary research centre that brings together researchers and expertise from across the world, the university and Australia, to work collaboratively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations on the diverse health challenges affecting our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The ambition of the centre is to contribute to achieving health equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through undertaking research that inspires transformational change in health care service design and delivery, and policy-making. The Centre has recently been recognised as one of seven research Flagship Centres in the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University and has recently been placed as the global leader in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research. This integrated faculty brings opportunity for innovation, progressive thinking and challenging the status quo by establishing rich, productive research units that cross traditional academic school and discipline boundaries. We operate across four large health precincts (three metropolitan and one regional/rural) where University facilities are co-located with hospitals and medical research institutes.

The Poche Centre has an opportunity for suitable candidate to be appointed at either Level D, C or B. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Apply for research funding opportunities to support the development of your research plan of work
  • Undertake original research (either independently or as part of a team) within discipline or area of expertise
  • Apply and refine expertise in research methodologies, work with Centre Director, and staff, to further the vision and objectives of the Poche Centre
  • Contribute to the research and research administration activities of the centre
  • Develop productive and rich relationships, collaborations and partnerships with external parties (including research partners, government bodies and industry) which will ultimately contribute to improved outcomes for the profession, industry and/or community
  • Provide day-to-day support to the Centre Director and the broader Poche team, including supporting research projects and mentoring higher degree research (HDR) students
  • Assist with future grant applications and supervision of HDR students.

About you

For Level B : Research Fellow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research

  • Has a PhD or MPhil (or is near completion) focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing or related field
  • Has a vision to develop a postdoctoral research plan of work that contributes to making change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellness outcomes
  • Has a well-developed understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing, culture, history and current relevant issues
  • Is able to demonstrate a track record of impactful research and publications (or other output)
  • Has experience as a mentor for junior and potential scholars as evidenced by supervision, mentoring, and support
  • Can demonstrate a strong track record of effectively working in multi-disciplinary teams, industry and with professional institutions, health partners, and stakeholders.
  • Job Profile : Level B Research Focused Academic

For Level C: Senior Research Fellow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research (In addition to the above

  • Has a PhD focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing or related wellbeing
  • Ability to bring existing HDR research students and or existing funded research projects
  • Acknowledged at a national level as influential in expanding knowledge within the discipline and developing research network internationally
  • An established network of relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the discipline, School/ Faculty and University
  • A developing knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector
  • Job Profile : Level C Research Focused Academic

For Level D : Associate Professor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research

(In addition to the above)

  • leading authority within your area of expertise
  • have a national and international reputation for excellence
  • Have national and international research collaborations and networks
  • maintain reputation by actively contributing to research and scholarship, academic debate, policy development, and innovation within the University and the broader community
  • have a research profile that includes competitive research grants, publications, and evidence of recognition within the research community as a whole, and/or significant expertise in the practice of health policy
  • proven experience in people management and leadership in the higher education sector, or in government, will demonstrate the ability to supervise and/or mentor others to success.
