About The National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health

The National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health (the Centre) is a new major initiative supported by the Australian Government, Department of Health and Aged Care, which commenced in 2023. The Centre’s purpose is to improve the health of people with intellectual disability. The Centre is be based at UNSW Sydney.

The Manager – First Nations Strategy is an identified role, as Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander.

The Centre is committed to ensuring the strengths and priorities of First Nations people with intellectual disability are embedded throughout the governance, policies, systems, programs, and culture of the Centre. The Manager - First Nations Strategy role is dedicated to ensuring this commitment is realised. Whilst the position will be located within the Centre, at UNSW, reporting directly to the Centre Chief Operating Officer, you will work in partnership with consortium member First Peoples Disability Network (FPDN) and closely with other national First Nations disability peak bodies.

This is a critical role that will provide expert advice and input into the planning, development, implementation, monitoring of the Centre for success and will be responsible for full oversight of the First Nations strategy and associated activities across the Centre including high level budgets, monitoring, and reporting against KPIs.

The Manager will report to the Chief Operating Officer, with a dotted line to the Centre Director and may have direct reports for project delivery. They will also have a partnering role with FPDN, and other nationally and internationally dispersed First Nations and non- Indigenous Centre stakeholders. Accordingly, occasional interstate travel will be required.

Who You Are

  • Experience working with First Nations people with disability (either professionally or personally), including intellectual disability and commitment to inclusion and co-design methodologies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of or interest in cultural models of inclusion, cultural and social determinants of wellbeing for First Nations people with disability
  • Demonstrated understanding (or willingness to learn) of intersectionality and developing organisational and programmatic solutions and responses to address discrimination.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, including for people with intellectual disability, to initiate and maintain effective relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a diverse team to drive change, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Strong project management skills
  • Excellent stakeholder relationships, including with community-controlled sector and peak bodies, universities and/or industry partners.
