About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for an interdisciplinary Lecturer/Senior Lecturer to focus their efforts on growing their profile in teaching, research, researcher supervision and development, and citizenship and service, both internal and external. The successful applicant will work across both the School of Medicine and the School of Law, focusing on teaching and scholarship at the intersection of ethics, law and professionalism. You may be required to teach into the compulsory raft of subjects of the LLB(Hons) program in the Law School and as a member of the Academy for Medical Education, will be involved in the design and conduct of the integrated MD program. You will also play a role in the development of interdisciplinary courses and enhance the collaboration between the School of Law and the School of Medicine.

At this level you may coordinate or lead the activities of other staff and contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students. As a teaching and research academic at Level B, the successful applicant will aspire to achieve national recognition in their field of research, and as a Senior Lecturer at Level C the successful applicant will be expected to have achieved national recognition and have a developing international profile in their field of research.

This position will be based predominately at our Herston Campus however the successful candidate will be expected to engage in teaching and other activities at the St Lucia Campus.

Key responsibilities will include:

Teaching

• Contribute to the development of new programs and course material in the School of Medicine and the School of Law, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders, ensuring that courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.
• Teach across different settings and actively contribute towards educational practice and innovative curriculum design, including online learning and alternative teaching methods where appropriate.
• Participate in the teaching of ethics, law and professionalism in the School of Medicine.
• Participate in the teaching of courses in the undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs of the Law School, with preference being given to a candidate who is willing and able to teach into the ‘Priestley 11’ subjects for law, including the Law of Torts.
• Coordinate courses, prepare and deliver lectures, seminars and tutorials, and undertake assessment and marking for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Law School and/or the School of Medicine.
• Maintain and improve the quality of courses as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.
• Provide high-quality service to students, including academic counselling and advice.
• Understand and apply University Rules relevant to teaching and learning practice.

Research

• Develop an independent and/or team research program to achieve national (and, for Level C, international) recognition and impact in the combined disciplines of ethics, law and professionalism
• Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development and conduct of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
• Contribute as Chief Investigator (often in conjunction with more experienced researchers) in applications for external research funding, which includes actively seeking, obtaining and managing research funding.
• Maintain an active and effective record of publishing in high-quality research journals, other appropriate refereed publications, and conference publications.
• Review and draw upon best-practice research methodologies.
• Participate in regular meetings to discuss project objectives, methodology and outcomes.

Supervision and Researcher Development

• Contribute to the supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.
• Additionally, for Level C, facilitate engagement opportunities for supervisees, lead others in the responsible conduct of research, and actively develop one’s own supervision capabilities.

Citizenship and Service

• Actively develop partnerships by fostering relationships with colleagues, industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.
• Show leadership of self and others through mentoring and collaboration.
• Efficiently manage allocated internal service roles and processes, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
• Work to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.
• Effectively perform a range of administrative functions as required.
• Provide support to other academic positions as needed and during absences.
• Consistently demonstrate the UQ values.

This is a teaching & research position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance. This is a full-time continuing position at Academic level B or C.

The full-time equivalent base salary at Academic Level B will be in the range $106,079 - $125,687 plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $124,113 - $147,054 annually.

The full-time equivalent base salary at Academic Level C will be in the range $129,609 - $149,217, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $151,643 - $174,585 annually.

As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.

About You

Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant field, preferably in Health Law. Additionally, you will demonstrate:

• A growing profile in teaching and research in the discipline area.
• A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
• Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
• Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate level across a variety of settings, including small and large groups.
• Experience in course coordination and contribution to the development and continuous innovation of new programs, curriculum design and course material in the discipline area.
• A growing or (for Level C, established) record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
• Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities.
