Animal Ethics Committee Members (Voluntary) - Categories C and D

University of Queensland

The University of Queensland’s world-class medical and biological research continues to provide solutions to some of the greatest problems of our time:

  • Impacts of global warming
  • Depletion of animal species
  • Feeding an expanding population
  • Healthcare needs of ageing Australians
  • Infectious diseases
  • Soaring rates of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, mental illness, infertility and cancer

You can help to advance this work, in an important and practical way

For research that involves the study of animals in the wild or in agriculture, or the use of animal models of human disease, UQ’s Animal Ethics Committees (AECs) review proposals and ensure that animal welfare is fully considered. Your input will help us strike the right balance between generating medical, agricultural, and ecological advances and recognising animal welfare and community expectations.

UQ has six AEC’s who review applications based upon a subset of knowledge and/or species being used. Each AEC meets on a monthly basis to review applications for research, breeding and teaching activities. Meetings take place at the St Lucia and Gatton campuses and/or by videoconference when required. Expressions of interest are sought for Category C and Category D members.

  • A Category C member is a person with demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals. They must not be employed by or otherwise associated with the institution, and not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. While not necessarily representing an animal welfare organisation, the person must have active membership of and endorsement by, such an organisation.
  • A Category D member is someone who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond their undergraduate education. As per the Category C members, they must not be employed by or otherwise associated with the institution. Category D members should be viewed by the wider community as bringing a completely independent view to the AEC and must not fit the requirements of any other category.

Members must be able to read and access documents online and be willing to be active participants in the meetings - raising questions and contributing their opinions. A mentoring program is available to assist new members in getting started should they be interested in this.

What are the benefits to you? Community members receive:

  • A significant role in enabling the developing medical, biological and agricultural discovery
  • A sitting fee
  • A light lunch provided during the meetings
  • Community membership to UQ’s libraries

Further information on the role of UQ’s AECs is also available on our website (here).
