We are seeking a skilled WordPress Developer to join our dynamic team. This role is open to applicants from all major capital cities on a 6-month fixed term contract.
In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining websites using the WordPress platform. You will work closely with designers, content creators, and project managers to deliver high-quality, responsive, and user-friendly websites.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of web development, a passion for clean and efficient code, and an eye for detail.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Website Development & Customisation
- Develop and maintain WordPress websites, ensuring they are user-friendly, responsive, and optimised for performance.
- Customise themes and plugins to meet specific project requirements, including the integration of third-party tools and APIs.
- Create and implement custom functionality to enhance the user experience and meet client needs.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Provide ongoing support and maintenance for existing WordPress websites.
- Troubleshoot and resolve website issues, including performance problems, bugs, and errors.
- Monitor and ensure site security, backups, and uptime.
Optimisation & SEO
- Optimise websites for speed, performance, and search engine optimisation (SEO).
- Implement best practices for SEO, ensuring websites rank well in search engines and provide a seamless user experience.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with the web team, designers, communication advisors and portfolio members to ensure the website aligns with branding and content strategies.
- Liaise with stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver solutions that meet union objectives.
Promote and champion UX/UI principles
- Promote and support the portfolio in the adoption of UX/UI principles to improve user experiences and the uptake of best practice.
- Gather and analyse user feedback to inform iterative design improvements, ensuring an engaging and seamless user experience.
Internal Communications
- Contribute to as directed, the creation and delivery of internal communications, ensuring employees are kept informed, engaged, and aligned with organisational objectives.
Testing & Quality Assurance
- Conduct thorough testing of websites to ensure compatibility across browsers, devices, and screen sizes.
- Perform debugging and quality assurance checks to ensure the highest standards of website functionality.
Content Management & Integration
- Assist with the management of website content using the WordPress content management system (CMS).
Growth & Retention
- Contribute to content strategies and campaigns that drive audience growth, engagement, and retention.
- Implement tactics to nurture and expand digital communities, fostering long-term member engagement.
- Analyse audience behaviours and preferences to tailor content that enhances the audience and member experience.
Brand & Reputation Management
- Ensure content reflects and enhances the UWU’s brand identity and values.
- Monitor online sentiment and engage with audiences to maintain a positive brand image.
- Support crisis communications and reputation management efforts through timely, accurate, and thoughtful content.
Collaboration, Stakeholder Engagement & Active Team Member
- Work closely with the Communications and Digital portfolio, and IT teams to deliver integrated digital solutions.
- Provide training and support to internal teams on best practices.
- Liaise with external vendors or freelancers, as needed, for specialised production.
- Cover other roles of the Brand, Marketing and Retention team as necessary due to leave, assignment or other operational necessities.
Trend Analysis & Innovation
- Stay up-to-date with digital trends, tools, and platforms to innovate content strategies.
- Experiment with new content formats to engage and grow audiences.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Development, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Experience
- Training as a WordPress Developer
- Experience developing and customising WordPress themes and plugins.
- Portfolio of previous projects showcasing technical skills and creativity.
- Proven experience working individually and collaboratively as part of a team.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP.
- Experience with database management.
- Familiarity with version control tools such as Git.
- Experience with website optimisation techniques, including performance and SEO.
- Knowledge of website security best practices.
Soft Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organisational and time-management abilities.
- Creative mindset with a detail-oriented approach.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Commitment to and understanding of UWU’s values and priorities.
To perform this job, you will also be required to have or obtain and maintain:
- A valid driver’s licence; and
- Right of Entry Permits; and
- Immunisation against COVID-19 or have a medical exemption
REMUNERATION
An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant, which will include:
- Salary commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience;
- A motor vehicle or motor vehicle allowance;
- 16% superannuation
- 6 weeks annual leave plus 25% leave loading
