About the role

Join Victoria Legal Aid's Broadmeadows team as a Deputy Managing Lawyer, providing operational leadership and expert legal services across criminal, family, and civil law with a focus on criminal law and family violence. You'll manage a team of legal staff, mentor junior lawyers, and deliver high-quality legal services, including complex casework and court advocacy.

Working alongside the Regional Manager, you will provide operational management and legal supervision for the Broadmeadows legal team predominantly across Criminal Law, and also Family Law, Child Protection and Civil Law matters. You will mentor staff and support the development and training of lawyers within the team.

Broadmeadows is also home to a range of innovative therapeutic justice approaches, including the Specialist Children's Court, Specialist Family Violence Court and Koori Court, offering a great opportunity to develop your professional career within VLA. 

This role is based at our Broadmeadows office on Wurundjeri Country.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • The ability to lead and motivate a team, provide mentorship, and foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Strong background in criminal (preferred), family, or civil law, with the ability to handle complex cases and provide high-quality legal advice and court advocacy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of clients, including those who are socially and economically disadvantaged, as well as with external stakeholders.
  • A commitment to working collaboratively with others and fostering a cooperative and supportive team environment.
  • A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
