ABOUT US

Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is the peak body for unions in Victoria. We are seeking to employ a full-time Project Research Officer for our Workplaces for Women project to advance gender equality in gender segregated industries.

The Workplace for Women Project runs for 12 months from the start of April 2025.

The Workplaces for Women Project promotes gender equality in gender segregated industries to create workplaces where women are safe, respected, equal and included. The Project will conduct outreach and development of women workers and workplace leaders, develop strategic networks, conduct and publish research, develop resources and cutting edge materials, develop and deliver relevant training to suit a range of audiences.

The Project works with VTHC’s affiliate unions, relevant industry stakeholders, employers, the ACTU and other state-based Trades and Labour Councils.

We are seeking to employ a passionate Research Officer who wants to contribute to advancing gender equality in gender segregated, historically male dominated industries.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Undertaking industrial, employment, industry and policy research
  • Drafting submissions to government
  • Conducting desktop research and assisting in development of survey tools to gather and analyse qualitative and quantitative data
  • Preparing written and oral briefs to support the goals of the Project
  • Contributing to preparation of materials and industrial resources suitable for multiple different audiences
  • Maintaining administrative and recording systems to support Project outcomes and contributing to compliance and quality control functions

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, gender equality and trade union principles
  • Working understanding of industrial and legislative frameworks relevant to working women
  • Capacity to contribute to strategic industrial policy development and prepare relevant resources
  • Understanding of gender inequality and barriers to employment and retention
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and stakeholder management skills, and ability to develop rapport with a variety of people
  • Excellent written and presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment and manage competing demands
  • Well-developed organisational and administrative skills, including collecting, managing and reporting data
  • Ability to think critically and creatively to problem solve

OTHER DESIRED ATTRIBUTES:

  • Experience working at a trade union, policy/research role or similar
  • Knowledge of specific issues for workers from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of key industrial policy areas or experience working with government
  • A relevant degree is desirable but not required

MORE INFORMATION

This is position is a fixed term, full time position set at Level 4 or 5 of our classification structure (approx. $79,000 - 87,000).

The Workplace for Women Project runs for 12 months from the start of April 2025. Victorian Trades Hall has an Enterprise Agreement with a monthly RDO (in recognition of occasional additional hours) and 12% superannuation.

This position is based at Victorian Trades Hall in Carlton.

This position reports to the Assistant Secretary and Secretary through the Politics and Research Lead. Some irregular hours, regional and interstate travel may be required in this role.
