Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is the peak body for unions in Victoria. We are seeking to employ a fixed-term full-time Senior Organiser for VTHC’s project to promote and advance gender equality in gender segregated industries.

The Workplace for Women Project runs for 12 months from the start of April 2025.

The Workplaces for Women Project promotes gender equality in gender segregated industries to create workplaces where women are safe, respected, equal and included. The Project will conduct outreach and development of women workers and workplace leaders, develop strategic networks, conduct and publish research, develop new best practice resources and cutting-edge materials to promote gender equality, develop and deliver relevant training to suit a range of audiences.

The Senior Organiser will work as part of a team and will engage with workers, VTHC’s affiliate unions, relevant industry stakeholders, employers, the ACTU and other state-based Trades and Labour Councils.

We are seeking to employ a Senior Organiser who is passionate about advancing gender equality in gender segregated, historically male dominated industries.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Managing a small team of outreach organisers
  • Coordinating and conducting day to day outreach work with women workers, workplace leaders, employers and industry stakeholders
  • Writing and approving emails, phone scripts, social media and website content and other materials such as surveys
  • Managing data across teams across multiple applications
  • Training and developing workplace leaders and supporting peer networks
  • Providing basic industrial support and guidance
  • Planning and running external events and meetings with different audiences
  • Coordinating with key external stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of the Project
  • Maintaining accurate administrative and recording systems to support Project outcomes and contributing to compliance and quality control functions
  • Supporting Project Leadership and other key staff in successful delivery of the Project

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, gender equality and trade union principles
  • Working understanding of industrial and legislative frameworks relevant to working women
  • An understanding of gender inequality and its impacts in the workplace and beyond, including barriers to employment and retention
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to develop rapport with a variety of people including workers, delegate, HSRs, union officials, employers and other industry stakeholders
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, presentation and skills
  • Ability to set priorities when faced with competing demands and to think critically and creatively to solve problems
  • Well-developed organisational and administrative skills, including collecting, managing and reporting data
  • Ability to work with and maintain relationships with a range of partners, including affiliate unions, employers and other industry stakeholders
  • Experience working at a trade union or similar and/or experience working in a gender segregated industry
  • Two years of supervisory experience of a small team
  • Knowledge of specific issues for workers from diverse backgrounds

MORE INFORMATION:

This is position is a fixed term, full time position set at Level 6 of our classification structure (approx. $95,000).

The Workplace for Women Project runs for 12 months from the start of April 2025. Victorian Trades Hall has an Enterprise Agreement with a monthly RDO (in recognition of occasional additional hours) and 12% superannuation.

This position is based at Victorian Trades Hall in Carlton.

This position reports to the Assistant Secretary and Secretary through Project Leadership. Some irregular hours, regional and interstate travel may be required in this role.
