ABOUT VICTORIAN TRADES HALL COUNCIL AND THE VICTORIAN LABOUR COLLEGE

Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is the peak body for unions in Victoria. It provides industrial support for affiliated unions and runs campaigns to promote the interests of Victorian workers.

The Victorian Labour College is a program of the VTHC. It educates and organises working people about their rights, safety and power at work, supports unions to advance working people’s rights and campaigns for social change through building the capacity of unions and activists.

We are seeking to employ a Trainer who wants to use the power of training to educate and empower workers about their rights and safety at work.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Delivering WorkSafe-approved training
  • Delivering WorkSafe Provider Developed Training
  • Delivering the VTHC training packages Family Violence as a Workplace Issue and Safe Respectful Workplaces
  • Training union officials in the WorkSafe approved ARREO course
  • Delivering and contributing to broader training, such as political education, as the team expands its training program for workers, delegates, activists, workplace leaders, HSRs and affiliated unions.
  • Contributing to the maintenance of the continuous improvement systems relating to all training packages
  • Promoting the training team and its activities
  • Ensuring that the VTHC OHS training meets the requirements to maintain our WorkSafe provider approval
  • Advancing your professional development as per WorkSafe requirements.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and trade union principles
  • Relevant Certificate IV in training i.e., Cert IV Training and Assessment
  • Have been in a role for a minimum of two years where OHS was either a full-time responsibility or was a major part of that role
  • Have relevant and demonstrated experience in delivering training in an adult learning environment
  • Have a solid, detailed understanding of the OHS Act, in particular all sections relevant to the purpose of HSRs and ARREO’s and their powers, protections and entitlements
  • A passion for working directly with Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs), union officials and the delegates and members who make up our movement
  • A passion for educating working people to empower them and build worker power
  • Previous experience in union, political or community organising and training, including the application of transformative learning techniques
  • A demonstrated understanding of gender inequality and experience in delivering training on gender equality, gendered violence and family violence
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and an ability to build rapport with a variety of people and stakeholders

MORE INFORMATION

This is position set at Level 7 (approx. $106,000) of our classification structure.

Victorian Trades Hall has an Enterprise Agreement with a monthly RDO (in recognition of occasional additional hours) and 12% superannuation.

This position is based at Victorian Trades Hall in Carlton although we deliver training in both metro Melbourne and regional Victoria.

This position reports to the Assistant Secretary and Secretary through the Victorian Labour College Lead.

Some irregular hours, regional and interstate travel will be required in this role.
