About the Role

Warrigunya is in search of a committed, talented, respectful and kind Director(s) to enable the vision of the organisation to be achieved. The new general Director will collaborate with other board members to discuss, shape, review and oversee the strategic direction of Warrigunya and assist with leadership and general promotion of the vision and values of Warrigunya.

The responsibilities of the new Director:

Governing roles / Governing responsibilities

1. Lead

Represent all members and make sure they can participate and be heard; create vision; advocate, negotiate and maximise self-determination.

2. Plan

Set overall direction, purpose, future strategies, goals, ethics and values.

3. Organise

Develop polices and governance arrangements; interact with management; steer relationships, alliances and collaborations with the public and among stakeholders.

4. Control

Ensure the organisation is accountable, legal and financially stable; hire, support and oversee the performance of the top manager; monitor overall outcomes.

Desired Selection Criteria

  • Be concerned with the welfare of the residents (Aboriginal men post release) as a first priority. The appointee must have a passion for social justice and a clear commitment to and belief in achieving positive outcomes for those who have had contact with the Justice system.
  • Our directors must operate from a platform of truth. We expect directors to act with integrity: in an honest, transparent and positive manner.
  • An understanding of the principles and approaches required for effective governance.
  • Effective IT, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in areas such as business strategy, budgeting, fundraising, marketing and media.
  • Previous experience as a board director with a non profit organisation, especially for a First Nations organisation.
  • Be at least 18 years old (mandatory).
  • Have a police check completed within one month of being elected as a director (mandatory).
  • A majority of directors will be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander persons. Non-Indigenous directors must have cultural, awareness, sensitivity and respect.

Time Commitment

Warrigunya is a young organisation and so we are looking for a general director who will be actively engaged and involved in shaping the strategic direction of Warrigunya in accordance with our vision, values and objectives.

This position will require attendance at monthly Board meetings which usually take 1 to 1.5 hours. Meetings are held online and in Sale or Bairnsdale. Other tasks/meetings/emails will be required between Board meetings which could take up to 3 hours per week.

Once in place, the Board will delegate the operational tasks of the organisation to staff, however, presently it remains the Board’s responsibility to ensure that all resolutions from Board meetings are implemented and actions completed.
