The South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) has several exciting opportunities to be a part of a high priority research program in the State - the National Snapper Science Program. Led by SARDI Aquatic Sciences, this is a three-year, $5 million initiative, co-funded by the State Government and FRDC.

Based within our esteemed research team at West Beach and Port Lincoln, the program includes 12 projects that address key research priorities for Snapper and involves collaboration with industry stakeholders and researchers throughout southern Australia. Team members will also contribute to delivery of other fishery assessments of Blue Swimmer Crabs, Southern Calamari, King George Whiting, Southern Garfish, and Lakes and Coorong Finfish such as Black Bream and Mulloway.

To thrive and excel in this role, attention to detail and problem-solving skills are paramount and you will tackle challenges by applying innovative solutions and leveraging your research abilities, coupled with your effective communication skills and abilities to engage in research that provides the opportunity to collaborate with others and advances knowledge. Additionally, you will have a strong understanding of fisheries research and demonstrated knowledge of the biology and ecology of finfish species are essential.

Special Conditions:

  • Successful applicant will be required to satisfactorily complete a National Police Check (NPC) prior to being made an offer of employment
  • Australian residency or current works permit is required (responsibility of applicant to provide evidence of a current work permit).

Requirements

  • Regular intra-state and occasional inter-state travel.
  • Regular work outside normal working hours.
  • Field trips on research and commercial vessels.
  • Possession of a current C class driver's licence and willingness to drive.
  • Willingness to complete additional training as required (e.g. coxswains).
  • You acknowledge your work, health and safety obligations and our expectations.
  • The incumbent will be required to undertake emergency management training and must be willing to participate in emergency preparedness, response and recovery activities required by government agencies.
  • Upholding the ethical behaviour and professional integrity standards as contained in the Public Sector Act, 2009.
  • Participating in PIRSA's Performance Management and Development Program.

Essential:

  • A degree in Science with a major in fisheries, zoology or related discipline.

Desirable:

  • Elements of Shipboard Safety
  • Coxswain certification or higher
  • ADAS commercial dive qualification
