Safe Steps is the only 24/7, family violence response centre in Victoria, providing a “state-wide entry point” for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. Services include information and referral, crisis response, specialist family violence risk assessment, safety planning, Webchat, and access to supported crisis accommodation.

Our vision is safety, support and respect for all victim-survivors of domestic and family violence.

Our practice is trauma-informed and guided by evidence. We provide services to all victim-survivors and recognise that most of our work is dedicated to the needs of women and children which reflects the gendered nature of domestic and family violence.

THE ROLE

We are looking for a Children's Educational Teacher to join our Residential team in the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne. This is a new role at Safe Steps and a great opportunity to make your mark and a meaningful difference. The Children's Educational teacher role will provide educational services, support and guidance to children and young people residing in Residential services short term crisis accommodation.

PAY LEVEL: SCHADS Level 5 Pay Point 2 ($50.34)

CONTRACT TYPE: Maximum Term Contract of 1 year, Full Time (1.0 FTE)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement individual and group learning plans, working with children and young people to reach goals identified within each plan.
  • Provide tutoring support to children and young people in schoolwork assigned by their respective schools or provide age/stage appropriate educational material to support children in their learning journey.
  • Evaluate and report on the effectiveness of educational interventions, ensuring they positively impact the academic progress and overall wellbeing of children and young people accommodated in Residential Services short term crisis accommodation.
  • Providing individualised plans, support and guidance to meet the unique needs of each child, including those with special educational needs, learning difficulties, or language barriers to ensure equitable access to education
  • Develop and implement personalised learning plans for both individual and group activities, integrating both indoor and outdoor educational experiences.
  • Utilise Art Therapy and emotional regulation techniques to engage children and young people, enhancing their emotional expression and coping strategies within a supportive educational framework.
  • Monitor and assess each child and young person’s academic progress, providing regular and constructive feedback to staff and parents to inform ongoing educational planning and intervention strategies.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA 

Essential

  • Bachelor of Education
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with children
  • Demonstrated experience in responding to children who have experienced trauma.
  • Demonstrated ability to select and apply current evidenced based practice in the provision of Art Therapy in a special education setting.
  • Demonstrates ability to form collaborative partnerships with families, staff, and community members from a range of professional and cultural backgrounds.

Desirable

  • An understanding of relevant theories and practice frameworks that relate to Child Development, Trauma Informed practice and Family Violence
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the effects of family violence on children and the mother/child bond.
  • Understanding of the specialist family violence sector in Victoria.
