About the position

Do you want to contribute to saving the environment, solving climate change and making the patriarchy a thing of the past?

This is an exciting opportunity to join a passionate, growing team taking on some of the biggest challenges of our time -while fostering a culture of fun, care and personal sustainability.

Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) empowers, supports, funds and diversifies the leadership of women and gender-diverse people working for our environment and climate. Through leadership development, we are transforming Australia’s response to environmental and climate crises. Since 2016, WELA has run transformative programs for changemakers working (paid or unpaid) on environmental and climate action. Now, we are scaling our impact, reaching more women and gender-diverse people and launching new initiatives to strengthen leadership for change.

As the Learning Experience Designer and Facilitator, you will play a pivotal role in this growth by creating and delivering engaging, inclusive and impactful learning experiences for changemakers. Working closely with the Leadership Programs Director, the broader Programs team, and a network of facilitators, you will use your expertise to strengthen leadership capacity and systems change across Australia.

You’ll contribute to a range of programs, including the National Leadership Program, Leadership Intensives, and the Tools for Changemakers online series, all while championing cultural change that supports diversity, equity and inclusion.

To excel in this role, you’ll bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in designing, developing and delivering engaging, interactive and accessible leadership programs and learning experiences.

  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to connect meaningfully with a wide range of people and adapt your approach to different needs.

  • Strong networks and understanding of Australia’s environmental, climate and social justice movements to help craft relevant content that connects changemakers to the broader landscape.

  • A passion for empowering women and gender-diverse environmental changemakers by building capacity and capability through impactful leadership experiences.

  • A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, with an understanding of intersectional feminism.

  • Creativity, a growth mindset, and the ability to design and deliver relevant learning experiences that inspire and engage.

This position is part of a collaborative and caring team that embraces innovation, reflects on our impact, and constantly evolves to meet the needs of our community. At WELA, we know what we’re doing -and we’re always learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Facilitate Programs: Create and facilitate engaging professional leadership development programs and residential retreats for women and gender diverse people working for our environment and climate action.

  • Research and Review: Source and provide constructive feedback on learning activities to enhance their effectiveness, inclusiveness and relevance.

  • Moderate Learning Spaces: Manage in-person and online environments, including Slack, Google Meets and Zoom.

  • Program Evaluation: Assist in evaluating and assessing the impact of programs to ensure value and continuous improvement

  • Continuous Learning and Growth: Show a commitment to continuous learning and growth by exploring new facilitation methods, questioning assumptions about learning and supporting personal development.

  • Relational Practice: Foster meaningful, safe women and gender diverse-only spaces that prioritise connection and collaboration.

  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure adherence to health and safety policies to protect yourself and others.

As a small team, we support each other in our work so you’ll be expected to jump in and help out wherever needed. Likewise, you can count on the support of the team when you need it. We offer flexible work arrangements and are parent friendly.

About you

About WELA

Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) is empowering, supporting and funding women’s and gender diverse leadership for our environment and climate action, in order to transform Australia’s response to our environmental and climate crises.

Overwhelmingly, our existing political, business and societal leadership has failed to adequately address the climate and environmental crises at hand.

It’s time for a leadership change. Put simply, we will not get out of this by relying on the same leadership that got us into it. Instead, leadership styles that are strongly networked, collaborative, just and diverse and responsive to communities will be essential in the transition to a sustainable future. Qualities we see in abundance in women’s and gender diverse leadership. We need more of it.

Our 3-year strategic action plan prioritises expansion of our training, development and support for more connected influence and greater impact.
