About the Role:

The AHLO assists Aboriginal patients and their families and carers navigate the hospital system and advocate, liaise and provide support to patients during their hospital stay. The AHLO will help ensure that Western Health is culturally sensitive, safe and welcoming to Aboriginal people.

Duties:

  • Assist and support Aboriginal patients through advocacy, liaison and support throughout their hospital stay
  • Assist with internal and external referrals for services the patient may require
  • Contribute and participate in significant cultural events, for example Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week
  • Facilitate and support Cultural Safety Audits across WH Departments and education to staff around the importance of correctly identifying Aboriginal patients on all WH databases
  • Support the development, delivery and evaluation of educational programs focussing in on Aboriginal health, cultural awareness and cultural safety
  • Develop and continue to support important working relationships with relevant key community organisations and stakeholders
  • Contribute to monitoring service delivery and measuring outcomes, for instance reporting to Department of Health and Human Services and WH Aboriginal Health Steering Committee
  • Professionally represent Western Health at external forum and events
  • In addition to the key responsibilities specific to your role, you are required to deliver on the Key Organisational Accountabilities which are aligned with the Western Health strategic aims

Skills & Experience OR Essential Criteria:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Commitment to the Western Health values: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, Safety
  • An understanding of Aboriginal health issues, systems and policies at the local and state level
  • Demonstrated commitment and capability to make a positive difference in Aboriginal health and/or wellbeing
  • Have a sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and kinship networks
  • The ability to work as a member of a team with a range of community and professional groups
  • Ability to work autonomously within a variety of settings
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to engage the Aboriginal Community
  • Current Divers Licence
  • Current Working with Children Card
