About Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation

The Noongar Native Title Settlement is the most comprehensive native title agreement negotiated in Australian history. Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation is the regional corporation established under the Whadjuk People Indigenous Land Use Agreement to represent the Traditional Owners of the Whadjuk Agreement Area.

Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation has an important role in the South West Native Title Settlement with the Western Australian government. The settlement resolves all native title claims in the south west of the State in exchange for around $1.3 billion in land and other benefits for Noongar people.

Chief Executive Officer

This is a unique opportunity to further develop operations and establish progressive and sustainable outcomes which will enhance the social, cultural, and economic prosperity of the Whadjuk people.

Reporting to the Board, your core duties will include:

  • Provide strategic direction, leadership, and management.
  • Ensure compliance with the range of native title, statutory, legal, financial, and contractual obligations.
  • Ensure compliance with governance and trust structures.
  • Ensure financial performance and viability, developing resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the corporation.
  • Represent the interests and deliver services to the Noongar Community of the Whadjuk Region.
  • Ensure that the culture and heritage are maintained, recorded, protected, and shared in the community.
  • Empower the Board of Directors to strategically position itself as the leader in social and commercial development, governance, and economic development opportunities.
  • Engage with members, common law holders, and all other stakeholders.
  • Lead the development of strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Proactively manage all related media, public relations and stakeholder engagement.
  • Lead, recruit, workforce plan, and build capacity in the corporation’s staff.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively across a diverse range of stakeholders including Board members, staff, members/community, government, business, and philanthropy.
  • Transparent and high-integrity leadership.
  • Strong organisational abilities including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with an expansive diverse workforce.
  • Strong public speaking ability.

The key selection criteria below must be addressed for your application to be considered complete.

  • Demonstrated CEO experience of 5+ years (experience gained in an Aboriginal controlled community organisation and/or working closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will be well regarded).
  • Proven CEO experience in implementing and monitoring strategies and working with a board of directors.
  • Proven commercial, strategic partnerships, and stakeholder engagement experience of 5+ years with both government and private sector.
  • A relevant degree of tertiary qualification is essential for this position.
  • Proven ability to communicate sensitively and effectively in a culturally appropriate manner with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, and organisations.
  • High-level governance knowledge and experience.
  • Financial literacy and commercial acumen.
  • Strong organisational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with an expansive and diverse workforce.
  • Proven capability to develop community connections along with exceptional engagement and capabilities in diverse settings.
  • High ethical standards.
  • Experience and understanding of relevant legislation such as:
    • Native Title Act 1993
    • Western Australian Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (including Section 18 approvals).
    • Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984 (including Sections 9 and 10).
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain funding grants.
  • Experience and knowledge of the Whadjuk Indigenous Land Use Agreement is highly desirable.

In accordance with Clause 13.1 (d) of the Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation Rule Book, there is a preference for the CEO to be a Noongar person, but this is not a designated/identified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander appointment.
