Located on a beautiful 136acre property in the Yarra Valley (60 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD), Worawa Aboriginal College is a boarding school for Aboriginal girls in their secondary years of schooling. An Aboriginal initiative, Worawa is an Independent school, owned and governed by Aboriginal people, and operates on a philosophy of ‘Walking Together to Make a Difference’.

A full boarding school, Worawa was established as a response to the needs of Aboriginal adolescents and the difficulties these young people experience in the mainstream educational system. The diversity of Aboriginal Australia is reflected in the student population drawn from communities across the country. Worawa provides a holistic education based on an integrated Education, Culture, and Wellbeing model.

Worawa is in an exciting phase of organisational growth. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has experience and knowledge of Nursing and working with First Nations young Peoples.

THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT MUST HAVE:

  • Registration by the Nurses Board as an EN or RN and a current practicing certificate with at least 3 years, post-registration experience.
  • Senior First Aid, Anaphylaxis Management Qualifications, demonstrated competency in Basic Life Support.
  • Previous experience in a role as a School Nurse, Accident and Emergency and/or Pediatric Nurse or equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience in health promotion, education case co-ordination, preferably in a school setting.
  • Understanding of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (‘ANMC’) National Competencies for the Registered Nurse and Midwifes in Recommended Domains.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the ANMC Code of professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia (2003).
  • A successful record of working with adolescents and children, preferably in a school or other educational environment
  • An understanding of the social, developmental and health needs of young children and adolescents and a commitment to holistic student wellbeing
  • Organised and flexible, with the ability to prioritise workloads, manage multiple tasks and be proactive
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills
  • A demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the diversity of Aboriginal cultures and health issues affecting the Aboriginal community and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal people
  • Working knowledge of Victorian Department of Human Services and other legislative Child Safety, Mandatory Reporting and Duty of Care requirements
  • Observe confidentiality guidelines within the Quality Framework and practice of the College
  • Current Working with Children Check and Police Check
  • Current drivers’ licence

  • ASSIST - Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
  • Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training
  • De-Escalation and Trauma Informed Training
