Paralegal

WorkLawyers
  • Paralegal job for a progressive firm based in Newtown Sydney and agreed WFH
  • At least 1 day per week (Fridays preferred) permanent part-time
  • Above Award pay $ and superannuation.

The Firm

WorkLawyers was established in 2017 and is a small employment law firm (with 3 lawyers and 3 paralegals) based in Newtown, Sydney. We pay above Award wages and above minimum superannuation. Everyone usually works part time. We are a progressive firm with a clear focus on advice, advocacy and litigation for employees who have been screwed over, and we occasionally assist employers to mix it up. Our staff work flexible hours at home or in the office and we are committed to supporting staff with family and study and other aspects of life. Our three current paralegals have regular agreed time off for study and exams. At work we encourage collective problem solving and a collegiate, helpful culture.

The Job

We are offering the position on a part time basis of 1-2 days per week. The job involves:

  • Updating the firm's diary, drafting simple and complex correspondence, taking initial calls and emails from prospective clients and completing intake assessments
  • Completing legal research tasks and drafting applications, and other legal documents
  • Underpayment and loss calculations
  • Contributing to content creation and upload to social media accounts
  • Attending and assisting with conferences and hearings primarily in the Fair Work Commission, NSW IRC and the Federal Courts.

Who are we looking for?

Someone who is keen to give bad employers sleepness nights, is empathetic to clients, (many of whom are distressed) but can also keep their eyes on the prize.

Practically we need someone who has some experience in the legal field or is capable of quickly understanding the principles of employment law litigation. While there is no essential criteria we think candidates with the following features will be most likely to fit the bill:

  • Completion of one to three years of a tertiary qualifications in law;
  • 1-2 years of experience in the legal industry;
  • Organised and eager to keep learning.
  • Experience with practice management software (bonus points if you are proficient in CLIO); and
  • Comfortable with occasionally robust and or foul language and the boss' penchant for 80’s soft rock and the Hilltop Hoods.
  • Candidates with the following features are discouraged from applying:
    • Strong dislike of working collectively in a small office;
    • Inability to change tasks quickly, get stuff done, (even the boring grinding stuff) and read minds.
    • Ongoing affiliations to elitist groups (such as some Private School Alumni).
