This position exists to provide support and mentoring to build community capacity, development and governance skills within our partner communities.

The West Kimberley Early Childhood and Development project works to address community development through early childhood and parenting activities which we support in nine remote Aboriginal communities; Mowanjum, Pandanus Park, Imintji, Ngallagunda, Kupungarri, Looma, Jarlmadangah, Noonkanbah and Derby town in the West Kimberley Region of Western Australia.

A day in the life of WVA’s Project Facilitator includes:

This role will focus on supporting the implementation of the West Kimberley Early Childhood and Development project, by spending two weeks in every month with remote communities in the region.

Work in community will include:

• Mentoring and supporting community-based playgroup facilitators,
• Mentoring and supporting community Early Childhood governance committees,
• Working with community members and partners to implement a number of initiatives.

This will include maintaining early childhood activity spaces and supporting playgroups, range of early childhood training and employment activities and supporting access to other early childhood health and allied health expertise.

Currently, the project is establishing new work in three communities, which this role will support through the design and development of a community-led early childhood program.

The role will require the ability to be flexible and responsive to communities needs which can change.

Who are you?

• Experience working in the Early Childhood and Community Development sector
• Experience facilitating community consultations and influencing community participation
• Demonstrated professional experience working with remote Aboriginal communities in a development context
• Sound knowledge of the cultural, political, economic and social issues affecting Aboriginal people in remote Australia
• Experience in providing mentoring, training and support
• Good understanding of, & firm commitment to, community development processes, gender equity, participatory approaches and development theory
• Working in high pressure and flexible environments

What you need to know

This role is three years fixed term contract operating in a full-time capacity and will be based in our office in Derby, WA. This role requires regular travel to remote communities on a fortnightly basis.
