About us

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation is a Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) appointed under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (Vic.). We represent the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Traditional Custodians of Melbourne and the Greater Melbourne region, and we take great pride in our responsibility for protecting and managing Aboriginal cultural heritage objects and places on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. The Corporation offers a range of other cultural services including environmental land management, cross-cultural education, traditional Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremonies, research, and cultural consultations.

Purpose

The GIS Officer will support Wurundjeri Corporation operations and project activities by delivering expert cartographic and spatial services. This will involve the implementation and operation of GIS systems, creation and maintenance of GIS datasets, spatial analysis, and the delivery of mapping and other spatial services and outputs.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop, translate, analyse, and maintain spatial data (relating especially to heritage and environmental places) that captures user requirements.
  • Preparation of mapping products that communicate effectively.
  • Providing strategic advice as it relates to geospatial information and offering guidance on GIS-related enquiries.
  • Implement and operate GIS systems and platforms.
  • Auditing of legacy GIS data and ensuring that incoming spatial data is added to the GIS database.
  • Develop systems over time to improve the acquisition, storage and sharing of spatial information across the Corporation and its membership.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with other Wurundjeri Corporation Units, Wurundjeri Elders, Members and the wider Wurundjeri community.
  • Ability to develop and maintain processes and systems that:
  • Capture, securely store and provide appropriate access to Wurundjeri spatial information and databases.
  • Provide best-practice administrative support.

About you

Education and qualifications (or equivalent level of learning)

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (e.g. Spatial Information Services, Geospatial Science)

Experience

  • Prior experience in a similar role.  
  • Provision of mapping and GIS support for native title, heritage and natural resource management matters would be well regarded.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Australian communities and organisations would be well regarded.

Knowledge and skills

  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro.
  • Familiarity with other geospatial software, e.g. MapInfo, QGIS.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Familiarity with Zoom and Teams. 
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential inquiries and information with discretion and in a culturally sensitive manner. 
  • A proactive approach and keen problem-solving abilities. 
  • Attention to detail and time-management, planning and prioritisation skills. 

Personal qualities

  • Knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal cultures and associated matters including cultural safety and social issues.
  • Self-managed, with the ability to take the initiative, work to tight deadlines and manage competing deadlines.
