OVERVIEW OF THE CORPORATION

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation (WWCHAC) is a Registered Aboriginal Party appointed under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006. The Corporation holds statutory responsibilities for the protection and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage objects and places in Victoria. WWCHAC is the representative organisation of Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people and community. Additional functions of WWCHAC include, environmental land management, cross-cultural education, traditional welcome to country and smoking ceremonies, and cultural consultations.

ROLE

An excited opportunity has arisen for a Yarra Strategic Plan Lead to join the Wurundjeri Corporation’s Water Program on a full time basis.

The purpose of this position is to lead the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Corporation’s (WWCHAC) engagement and participation in the implementation of Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo/Yarra Strategic Plan (YSP) and other related responsibilities under the Yarra River Protection (Wilip-gin Birrarung Murron) Act. This role is responsible for pursuing and progressing WWCHAC’s interests and objectives through the YSP and associated forums.

The YSP is a 10-year strategy to protect and enhance the Yarra River, and identifies the Yarra River and its surrounding public land as one living and integrated natural entity. The YSP presents the WWCHAC with unprecedented opportunities to plan, lead and deliver projects across the Yarra River catchment, and recognises and positions Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people as decision-makers and delivery agents on Country.

The key tasks of this role will include: external stakeholder engagement, informing and engaging in YSP implementation processes, and collaborating with other Units of the Corporation to support project delivery through the YSP.

This is a 12-month position with possibility for extension pending future funding. Options to work from Abbotsford, Healesville or flexible arrangements are available to the right candidate.

Key responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary liaison for engagement with WWCHAC on the Yarra Strategic Plan
  • Engage closely with all levels of government, in particular the listed Responsible Public Entities (RPEs) under the Yarra River Protection Act
  • Work collaboratively with other WWCHAC Units, and facilitate engagement between RPEs and other WWCHAC staff
  • Support project design and delivery through the implementation of the YSP
  • Lead reporting and evaluation of YSP implementation internally and externally
  • Undertake opportunity assessments and gap analyses to identify long-term resourcing requirement for WWCHAC through the YSP

Key capabilities and experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field, such as environmental science, public policy, environmental law, community development, or a related discipline
  • At minimum 5 years of experience working in a similar role
  • Understanding and appreciation of Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung culture, history and connection to the Birrarung
  • Strong understanding of the Victorian water sector, and ideally previous experience working in the sector
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to prepare high-quality reports and documents
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously
  • The ability to carry out tasks in a culturally sensitive and confidential manner
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and community representative organisations is highly desirable
  • An understanding of the Yarra River Protection (Wilip-gin Birrarung Murron) Act 2017 and the Yarra Strategic Plan is desirable
