The Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas (GLPCA) is a global program of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The Expert Assessment Group for the Green List (EAGL) is the heart of the IUCN GLPCA process. They are the expert bodies set up within a jurisdiction (e.g. Australia) and their role is to evaluate and assess a protected / conserved area's application to become listed as a Green Listed Area according to a global standard, adapted to a national or regional context. The principal role of the EAGL is to assesses the applications based on evidence (including stakeholder feedback and a site visit) provided by the applicant protected or conserved areas. The EAGL members represent a range of disciplines relevant to protected area management and will evaluate applications based on their knowledge and expertise. For more information about the roles of EAGL members see Appendix 1 included in this letter.
It is important to note that the EAGL members are expected to work on a voluntary basis, in their personal capacity and according to their expertise without representing any organisation. The travel and out of pocket expenses of EAGL members in attending meetings of the EAGL and in visiting candidate protected areas will be met by the GLPCA programme and candidate sites.
Interested individuals are kindly requested to submit the following information to Dr Michelle Ward by the closing date:
The Vice-Chair of WCPA for Oceania, in consultation with WWF Australia will then evaluate all applications and select a group of 6-8 individuals to form the EAGL.
It is expected that a one-day orientation and training meeting for the EAGL members will be held in early in 2023. The EAGL is expected to meet no more than three or four times in a 12 month period with additional site visits by some EAGL members to each candidate site over the course of the year.
