About this Opportunity

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Trauma Counsellor to join our team. In this role, you will:

  • Provide high-quality and client-focused therapeutic counselling to individuals with intellectual disabilities at risk of or who have experienced acute or historical sexual violence or other crime or exploitation. 
  • Use diverse and creative trauma-informed methods to help clients understand their experiences, explore safety and justice options and develop coping strategies.
  • Contribute to and participate in the development and delivery of community education programs or group work for clients, families, carers and professionals as required.

The role is based in-office at Wooloowin 2 days per week, and is an outreach role two days/week, with one day in Beenleigh, the second based in Inala. Some flexible hours are available by negotiation for wellbeing and work-life balance. 

About you

We are looking for someone with:

Essential Criteria 

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Social Work, Counselling, Psychology, Behavioural Sciences, or other relevant qualifications
  • At least 2 years experience in a trauma-informed counselling, preferably with survivors of sexual violence or other crime, abuse and exploitation or similar.
  • Some knowledge of the issues facing people with intellectual disabilities, including systemic barriers faced by people with disabilities and the ability to develop strategies to address these challenges effectively. 
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • A current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) or eligibility to obtain one before commencing.

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge and experience of the criminal justice system and its implications for our clients and other stakeholders.
  • Experience in the development, co-ordination and facilitation of community education workshops.
