Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic) is the peak body and leading policy advocate on young people's issues in Victoria. Our vision is that the rights of young people in Victoria are respected, and they are active, visible and valued in their communities. For over 60 years, YACVic has advocated for the best interests of young people (aged 12-25 years) and the sector that works with them. YACVic provides additional targeted advocacy and services through our key services, YACVic Rural and the Youth Disability Advocacy Service (YDAS). YDAS is in the process of transitioning to independence in 2025.
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) works in collaboration with community partners to deliver the Deadly Democracy Program. The program aims to equip First Nations young people with skills to deliver electoral participation projects and events to their communities. The projects aim to raise awareness of how to enroll, how to vote and why it’s important to participate in elections.
We are looking for enthusiastic First Nations applicants aged 18-24 who are passionate about empowering their community through electoral participation.
You will be supervised by YACVic, supported by the AEC and mentored by Ninti One to develop your leadership capacities, project management skills and electoral knowledge delivered through a mix of online and in-person programs. In addition, you will join a wider network of Deadly Democracy participants to provide peer support as their projects develop.
Following the Deadly Democracy program, there is the potential for ongoing facilitation work. YACVic Young Peer Facilitators are a diverse group of young people from across Victoria working on a number of exciting YACVic projects, including projects delivered by the YACVic Rural team and their partners across the state. With training and support from the YACVic team, Young Peer Facilitators design, facilitate and support youth events, in particular training and consultation workshops, for and with other young people. Workshops and events are held online as well as in-person both in Melbourne and across the state.
We are committed to employing people based in rural or regional areas, so your geographic location or access to travel should not be a barrier to applying for this role.
This role is one of two Deadly Democracy Young Peer Facilitator roles at YACVic. The role holders will be supported and assisted to develop and deliver electoral participation projects, activities and events to their communities. This could include community workshops, mock elections, education sessions, social events with electoral focus, social media activity, enrolment drives or university events. It could even include artistic creations, with previous participants on the program having made murals and music videos.
As a Deadly Democracy Young Peer Facilitator, you will be supervised by YACVic, supported by the AEC and mentored by Ninti One to develop your leadership capacities, project management skills and electoral knowledge. In addition, you will join a larger network of Deadly Democracy participants from across the country, all delivering similar projects in their regions, who can provide each other with peer-to-peer support.
The AEC has engaged Ninti One (a First Nations organisation) to deliver training and education sessions to the network participants. These sessions aim to provide participants with leadership and cultural skills, project management and electoral education to deliver projects, activities and events to their communities and peers.
We are committed to employing people based in rural or regional areas, so your geographic location or access to travel should not be a barrier to applying for this role.
