Yarra Ranges Council

As the Disability Inclusion Officer, you will play a pivotal role in advancing disability inclusion across all Council operations and supporting our legislative responsibilities under the Disability Act 2006. You will lead the implementation of the Yarra Ranges Council’s Disability Action Plan, ensuring that individuals with disabilities and unpaid carers can fully participate in the community.

This role also involves engaging with key networks, including the Council’s Disability Advisory Committee and the Access and Equity Reference Group, to drive strategic initiatives, advocacy, and community partnerships. You will be responsible for identifying gaps in access to Council services, promoting inclusive practices, and collaborating with local disability organisations to build capacity.

What you will do in the role

  • Facilitate the Disability Advisory Committee and internal Access and Equity Reference Group to ensure community needs are met.
  • Strengthen community capacity by building partnerships with disability organisations, local groups, and other stakeholders.
  • Advocate for the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities, ensuring their voices are heard in community planning and service delivery.
  • Initiate and manage relationships with key stakeholders, offering advice, mentorship, and support to enhance inclusion practices.
  • Research, evaluate, and report on disability access initiatives, offering innovative solutions to address community needs.
  • Support business continuity and emergency management efforts to ensure the safety and inclusion of people with disabilities during times of crisis.

Experience and Skills We're Looking For

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated individual who thrives on making a difference. To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Strong knowledge of the Disability Act 2006 and the social model of disability, with experience in community development or advocacy.
  • Proven ability to build partnerships and collaborate with community groups and government agencies.
  • Experience leading advisory groups and guiding on disability access and inclusion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including report writing and presentations.
  • Proactive in identifying challenges and implementing solutions to improve inclusion.
  • Adaptable, with strong problem-solving and goal-driven focus in a changing environment.
