ABOUT TASRECYCLE

TasRecycle is proud to be the appointed Scheme Coordinator for Tasmania’s Container Refund Scheme which is set to launch in mid-2025. Under the brand “Recycle Rewards” Tasmanians will receive a 10c refund for every eligible container returned, creating clean streams of recycled materials that will help build our circular economy. As Scheme Coordinator, TasRecycle will be responsible for managing the marketing, running the financial operations, and ensuring the smooth operation of Tasmania’s container refund scheme.

Our mission is to make Tasmania a leader in beverage container recycling, reducing the amount of beverage containers in litter and landfill, whilst adding value to our local communities, businesses and the environment. All Tasmanians will benefit from Recycle Rewards, and there will also be opportunities for charities, community and sports groups to get involved with fundraising.

Not-for-profit by design, TasRecycle was formed by its Members; Asahi Holdings (Australia) Pty Ltd, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Australia Pty Ltd, and Lion Pty Ltd. The Members represent the majority of the Recycle Rewards-eligible containers supplied into Tasmania and each one has significant experience in managing container deposit schemes across Australia.

TasRecycle is governed by a Board of eight Directors, which will comprise six representatives from its Member organisations, alongside two independent Directors, including an independent Chair. TasRecycle’s executive team, led by CEO Ken Roughley, is already in place.

ABOUT THE ROLE

TasRecycle is seeking an independent Non-Executive Director who can provide effective oversight for Tasmania’s Container Deposit Scheme (“Recycle Rewards”). Critically, the successful applicant should have a background in sustainability and/or the circular economy, which can be drawn on to enhance the effectiveness and capability of the Board. Further, they should be capable of dealing with significant stakeholder engagement opportunities and challenges, program governance and oversight, and risk management. TasRecycle is also seeking to ensure that the Board represents a diverse range of gender, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and experiences.

Applicants must be mainly based in Tasmania and currently independent of the beverage industry. In addition, whilst applicants should have a background or experience in the recycling and waste industry (including waste recovery, processing, transport, or logistics), they must be currently independent of the sector and as such not a current executive officer, employee or Business Associate of the recycling and waste industry or association representing providers of a recycling or waste service.

This role will work closely with other TasRecycle Board members in order to deliver the necessary governance, oversight, and strategic direction so that TasRecycle can build and manage an effective container deposit scheme for Tasmania and deliver its obligations under its Agreement with the State. This is a paid Board role.
