ABOUT YOUNG WORKERS CENTRE

The Young Workers Centre is a community legal centre and one-stop-shop for young workers who want to learn about their rights at work or who need assistance resolving issues at work. We are based in Victorian Trades Hall Council, the peak body for trade unions in Victoria. We are a team of lawyers, organisers, educators, campaigners and researchers who empower young people working in Victoria with the knowledge and skills to make their workplaces safer and end workplace exploitation.

ABOUT THE YWC COMMUNITY LEGAL CENTRE

We run Victoria’s only specialist employment law community legal centre for young people. We provide legal advice and assistance to Victorians aged 30 and under with issues at work including wage theft and other issues with pay or conditions, dismissals, health and safety, discrimination, bullying and harassment.

Note: we encourage early career solicitors to apply. We do not require candidates to hold an unrestricted practising certificate.

ABOUT TRADES HALL

The Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is the peak body for unions in the state of Victoria. It provides industrial support for affiliated unions and runs campaigns to promote the interests of Victorian workers.

The position is based at Trades Hall in Carlton, Victoria.

DUTIES FOR THIS ROLE INCLUDE

  • Draft and provide written and verbal legal advice given to clients of the centre
  • Prepare court documents on behalf of clients of the YWC
  • Represent clients in FWC and other court and tribunals as required
  • Manage own caseload, under supervision
  • Identify organising opportunities in casework
  • Assist the Principal Solicitor with
  • supervising and training advocates;
  • monitoring quality of legal services and client intake processes; and
  • ensuring YWC funding KPIs relating to legal service are met
  • Participate in YWC and VTHC planning forums
  • Other duties as required

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Essential pre-requisites:

  • Hold or eligible to hold a practicing certificate as a solicitor in Victoria
  • Experience representing workers in employment and industrial law matters
  • Knowledge of the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) and industrial, employment and occupational health and safety laws

Other desirable skills and experience:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent research, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organisational and administration skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting young workers
  • An ability to work in a cooperative and consultative manner
  • Demonstrated high level of computer literacy including Excel (eg underpayment calculations), Outlook, Word and the ability to learn new casefile management databases
  • An ability to speak a second language

  • We have an attractive Collective Agreement, including RDOs (in recognition of occasional additional hours) and 12% superannuation.
  • The position reports to the Secretary and Assistant Secretary through the YWC Principal Solicitor.
  • Occasional intrastate travel.
