Queensland has the highest remand rates in Australia and 54 reasons' youth support services are focused on turning this statistic around. We need you to work closely with young people in Mackay who are involved with the youth justice system to take the steps to become the best they can be, through practical support, case management and advocacy.

54 reasons is Australia's leading child rights organisation - no ordinary not-for-profit.

A place where your purpose matters. Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we're here to make sure that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

With the child's voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve - in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

It takes all types of personalities and talents to drive our organisation- yours included. We value a healthy work-life balance and ensure our people feel connected to each other and our impact. Learn from inspiring people and grow from a connection to our strong local and global networks. From our programs to our support services - this is the place to realise your purpose.

A place to make a difference:

In this casual role (up to 24 hours a week) you'll be empowered to make a difference in young people's lives by learning, sharing and collaborating to find new ways to solve problems.

You will make a difference by:

  • Providing support to young people in the catchment area who are not supported by protective factors (families, friends, communities, school and cultural connections) to enable them to lead safe, healthy and active lives
  • Supporting young people who are entering, or already involved in, the Youth Justice System, including those who are exiting detention or under youth justice supervision
  • Providing a culturally responsive service by embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into your programs and services
  • Assisting young people and their families, kin or community members to make informed decisions about, or be connected to, the services and support that they need

A place to feel valued:

You're an ambitious and creative individual who upholds accountability and integrity in all work practices, an individual that can collaborate with all young people and relevant stakeholders, and an individual who has a passion for assisting disengaged young people to reach their full potential. We recognise your contribution and provide you the support to ensure you can bring your best, knowing here you have the space and opportunity to grow.

Bringing your best every day, means:

  • Clear understanding, willingness and demonstrated skills in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, young people disengaged with the school system, young people in contact with the justice system and those who have experienced trauma
  • Demonstrated experience in youth work
  • An understanding of intergenerational trauma
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • An understanding of child protection concerns and commitment to responding safely and effectively
  • Sound time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to manage and plan as a team and individual

A place to belong:
