The Foundation is an international development organisation working to prevent blindness and restore sight. This year marks The Foundation’s 30th anniversary of carrying on the legacy of Professor Fred Hollows, who believed every person had the right to quality eye care, no matter where they live. The Foundation has grown to work in more than 25 countries throughout Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific, as well as Australia. The Foundation has restored sight to more than 3 million people worldwide. We have an ambitious five-year strategic plan that aims to take us even closer to realising our vision of a world in which no person is needlessly blind or vision impaired and Indigenous Australians exercise their right to sight and good health.

ABOUT YOU

You will be an experienced PR and Media specialist, with proven success in pitching stories. You will have a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently in an end-to-end manner. You will be organised and deadline drive, with the ability to manage competing priorities. You will have a strong attention to detail and strong written and verbal communications skills. You will be able to build relationships across both internal and external stakeholders to ensure success. Further, you will be able to develop and become familiar with key messaging and write in The Foundations style and tone. Finally, you will be a team player, this is a fun and collaborative team that supports each other to achieve shared gaols and outcomes.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Communications & PR Advisor is accountable for supporting the Head of Communications in daily communications, public relations, and administrative work that align with The Foundation’s strategic framework.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development and implementation of The Foundation's communications strategy
  • Media relations, including identifying opportunities and pitching and coordinating stories that generate media coverage and align with The Foundation’s communications strategy.
  • Source and secure speaking opportunities for The Foundation’s spokespeople and ambassadors to establish The Foundation as a primary source of truth and expertise, and to raise brand awareness.
  • Media monitoring and reporting, including sourcing and saving clips and producing reports that explain key metrics.
  • Support the production and delivery of The Foundation's annual and bi-annual publications like Fred’s Vision and the Annual Report.
  • Support the Partnerships team with yearly events and initiatives, including securing speakers and ambassadors, writing event briefs, and arranging media.
  • Collaborate internally to identify PR and media opportunities to raise brand awareness and support existing events, such as the Humanity and Fred Awards.
  • Develop strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders – fostering relationships with journalists, The Foundation’s spokespeople, and their executive assistants, as well as external agencies/contractors.
  • Travel domestically as and when required
  • Other tasks as requested by your manager.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED

  • Strong experience in media relations and pitching, including leading and implementing communications and PR campaigns,
  • Strong experience in writing public-facing communication materials such as media releases, speaking points, and external publications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, fostering close relationships with journalists, agencies, and other team members to achieve shared goals.
  • Experience in delivering high quality communications materials for a diverse audience.

Desirable:

  • Experience in both proactive and reactive media.
  • Experience in showing leadership by delegating and coordinating others.
  • Preference for Undergraduate qualifications in Communications, Public Relations, Media, Journalism or related disciplines.
